A young man drinking at Loti restaurant on Fourth Street in Parkersburg revealed he handles dangerous nitro glycerine for a living. He said drunkenness keeps his sober senses in check and claimed a recent spill near Clarksburg could have blown the city apart with a shot of fibro-urethane. He refused to name his employer, citing a dangerous job and fear of consequences.
Prof Tl B Smelie general manager of Elileth Commercial School in Lowndes building has received a flattering offer to lead a Colorado school. He declined the Colorado offer, praised for his accomplishments and the strong results at his current school. The Coldtady school would be fortunate to secure his services.
Referee Frank Stout appoints eight receivers under a bankruptcy filing at the debtor Revien Vavitehy. The session addresses country practice, with lawyers and local figures present as the judge’s powers are outlined. A horse accident involving Sheets family and related injuries is noted during proceedings.
John Wheeler, a carpenter about 48, lies near death after Ernest Knseley, a farmer and peddler, struck him with a stone during a feud over a bundle of furs. Knseley fled toward the depot, with authorities fearing he may have left the country as Wheeler’s condition worsens.
The annual Christmas recital at Broaddus Institute, held Friday evening at the Baptist church, drew a large crowd. Students showcased piano, voice, reading, and violin selections including works by Gounod, Durand, Scharwenka, and Chopin with numerous performers led by Miss Gera Atcheson and Miss Annie Belle Reed among others.
The Secretary of State issued a charter to the West Virginia Architects and Builders of Clarksburg. Authorized capital stock stands at 25000 with 13500 subscribed and 6000 paid in. Incorporators are George E. Connell W. McNulty J. L. Rhodes F. H. Rhodes and W. H. Pierson Jr. This firm evolves from Connell and McNulty contractors now building the Jacobs building and plans new offices in that structure.
Mrs Louis Berger, newly wed a week earlier, suffered a severe collapse last Friday. Believing she must join her late husband Chris Stadelman, she summoned neighbors to pray and requested a preacher. The vigil ended with her fainting and declaring deep love for no one as she collapsed again.
The Buckhannon & Clarksburg Electric Railroad Company seeks a 50 year city franchise to build a street railway from Third Street by Traders Hotel through Mechanic and Water Streets to the corporate line. It must not obstruct travel, keep streets in repair, limit fares to ten cents, ensure safety and proper operation, and commence construction within 3.5 years. crossing permissions and bridge or railroad intersections require county and corporate consent.
A large crowd gathered for a weekly Trades and Labor Canall meeting on Friday night but found the Macabee group occupying the hall. They questioned the authority of the Macabbes and were shown a contract of priority. The hall's leader was out of the city and no decision could be made at that time.
