Cleveland prosecutors seek indictments on forgery charges in the Chadwick affair. Andrew Carnegie to testify Wednesday before the U S grand jury in Cleveland. Newton and Chadwick litigation continues with Newton’s counsel hopeful for settlement.
John M. Planizan qualified as sheriff of Harrison County and named deputies John G. Lang and F. M. Knox from this city and Leonard from Salem Me for a four year term. Lang has eight years service, Knox four, Leonard is son of a local teacher and brings qualification for office. Meanwhile five Polish and Hungarian laborers arrested in Glen were tried after a stabbing incident, found guilty of drunkenness and disorderly conduct, fined five dollars and costs, then released when others settled their fines.
A continuance sale of the Thompson property was ordered at the Court House door this afternoon. The high bid reached 4500 dollars but the owner objected, so the sale was postponed until December 19 at 1 o clock. The two frame houses on Chestnut street have 14 and seven rooms, respectively, and are rented at fair figures.
The Taylor County Sunday School Association meets at St Pauls Church in Grafton starting 2:30 with a song service and sessions through Thursday. Noted visitors include W G Pearcy of Chicago International Superintendent of Teacher Training, D B Purinton of Morgantown president of the State University and of the West Virginia Sunday School Association, and W C Shafer of Fairmont secretary of the State Association.
Members of the Harrison county circuit court hold a meeting to appoint a committee to present Judge John W. Mason's retirement and arrange a special on the county records. The event includes a display of city water works and a charity sale at Cass and Tully's grocery on Main Street Thursday December 1 starting at 2 PM with refreshments.
Public schools and teachers plan a holiday break from December to early January with closures through January. Police Court notes include arrests after a street fight between Poles and Mongolites, with fines and a five day work sentence for one offender. Snow halted construction work on the Brassetts and Broad Oaks extensions.

Rt. Rev. W. S. Gravatt coadjutor to the principal diocese conducted the Advent Mission at Christchurch and departed Monday for Parkerstrers and other diocese duties.

James Duff’s bartender remained in Salem to pack turpentine alcohol and gear. Starkey posted $600 bond after a grand jury examination before Justice Gordon.

Francis Thomas Francis received praise for his work supplying water to the city during a crisis. The text notes his efferent service benefiting hotels, seating houses, and many institutions, with barrels of mineral water supplied and recognition from the people.
The city faced a blackout after pumps along the river froze and failed, cutting water supply and disabling the electric plant. Repairs were needed, and snow was hauled to run foundry boilers. Nurse Anna Smith was summoned to aid Alice Foster Adamstoy, and Charles Brent remained gravely ill at home. Captain D J Drake of Salam issued a warning.
Charles W. Lynch was administered the oath of office by Clerk Momer Williams after being seated as judge-elect for Harrison and Lewis counties. His term begins January 1, 1905 and lasts ten years, with the oath taken Monday afternoon amid no quorum reported. The Custer Post Grand Army of the Republic failed to meet Monday night due to lack of quorum, with a new meeting planned for next week.
General Secretary Maytott of the union has arranged with city church leaders and secret orders for a union service at the Grand Opera House Sunday afternoon Christmas Day at 3 20. Secret orders will attend in salia and church choirs will fill the stage with Dr W Smith of Pittsburg invited to speak and likely to accept.
One hundred quarts of nitro glycerine exploded on the Ohio River near Catlettsburg Kentucky. Two oil drillers, Tim McGuire of Sistersville and another man, were killed. A skiff loaded with astroglyctrin bound for Mayaville was damaged as the blast sent debris across land and water. Hundreds heard the blast and rushed to the scene.
The Starkshame Poultry Show Association announces its first annual exhibition set for December 11 lasting three days. Arthur Sheets of West Milford is president coordinating preparations with Judy Orr of Beaver and other officers and directors guiding the event. In New York, Thomas W Lawton’s move to rally the Amalgamated copper market failed amid a 8 point drop and broader declines.
Auctioneer Samuel W. Gordon sold a pony and buggy belonging to J B Care at the Court House. Lee Boggins of Lumberport purchased them for $165. The pony was described as a cute little fellow.
Dole Parker, a young man, was shot by Lee Dodd at Pinnickin Nick Mines on Monday morning. Two bullets pierced Parker’s body and he is in a serious condition. He is now in hospital under care.
Authorities report a Wednesday shooting in Fairmont involving Lee Dodd who fired at Parker after accusing him of knocking on his door. Parker, struck in the right thigh and shoulder blade, was taken to Harrison County Hospital with injuries described as serious but not yet fatal. Dodd was arrested by Detective Hy Stewart and jailed pending the investigation.
A special term of the circuit court will be held in the city for a period of two days beginning Monday by Judge John W. Masta. The session aims to clear unfinished business from the May term and have matters ready for submission to the county officials.
