Immigration Bill Advances With Amendments Except One
Washington dispatch reports the Senate adopting all committee amendments to the immigration bill except for one imposing an educational test. The body also struck out a section banning sale of intoxicants within the capitol, and laid aside the bill to pass several unobjected pension measures. Key debated point was a $3 head tax on immigrants, upheld as a tax on transportation lines. Executive session followed and adjournment occurred. In the House, members paid a remarkable tribute to former Speaker Reed, adopting resolutions and adjourning in his memory.
