A special Pittsburg train delivered a large air fan to Mine No 8 at 1 o'clock, enabling testing and improved airflow. Rescue work paused to test the apparatus and then resumed at Mine Nos 6 and 8 as crews reached the interconnecting opening.
The Monongah mine disaster is described as the worst in memory with about 154 dead reported and hundreds more affected. Rescue operations continue as officials estimate possible total deaths around 4,511, and families face homelessness and hunger while communities rally to aid survivors.
Rescue efforts continue as fifty horses and mules are lost in the Monongah explosion. Burials begin for victims while townsfolk endure shortages of food and sleep as investigators and press converge on the scene. Trolley service ferries crowds to the disaster site and journalists from multiple cities document the tragedy.
