The Sixtieth Congress opens amid social bustle as members and families fill galleries. Formal business is minimal with resolutions notifying the President of assembly and swearing in of new members. The House elects Beaker Can DOR speaker over John Shar Williams 207 to 154.
Lewis Jackson was jailed after being found guilty of assaulting A. G. Davis at Mt. Clare Saturday night over a coal company store account. He received a $9 fine and 4 dollars in costs, with 10 days to pay or serve. Jackson was intoxicated and briefly resisted before being subdued and jailed. release possible if fines are paid.
An eastbound express passenger train collided with derailed freight cars on the Baltimore road near Shenandoah causing three deaths and about a dozen injuries. W. L. Hoffman of Baltimore was among the dead. The wreck halted the St. Louis New York express and disrupted service as cars piled on the track.
Constable Worthy Shrader arrested Joe Renardi at Gypsy Sunday night on a warrant sworn by William Franks in Magistrate Gordon s court. Franks charged Renardi with stealing two kegs of beer and agreed to drop the case if Renardi paid the beer costs and fines. The warrant was lodged with Mecawn and the case delibored. In Arlruer Germany on December 2 a professor from George W Josten University was sentenced to death for a crime involving the murder of his in laws. The case details are reported by Associated Press.
Reports from Pennsylvanias Nurommin Walled Coal Company say between thirty and forty miners were entombed after an explosion. Later updates place the count at fifty with no rescue found by noon as hope fades. In California Fremont mine in Daytown, eleven miners entombed after a Saturday fire faced near certainty of fatalities.
The second trial of Harry K. Thaw for the murder of Stanford White at Madison Square Garden was postponed to January 6. A special panel of 250 jurors will be summoned to aid in selecting the jury.
Chairman Ferris of the Populist national committee issued a call for the party convention to meet in St Louis on April 2 1908 to nominate candidates for president and vice president of the United States.
Emily Potts, 80, beloved resident of Mechanic street, died Sunday afternoon. Survived by niece Miss Laura Potts, she was known as Aunt Emily, a devout Christian. Burial is at Musonic Cemetery. services and probate details follow.
A jealous dispute at the Park hotel in Tin Plate led Edrich Cavins to shoot James Carson in room 10. Carson was wounded in the shoulder and thigh, but walked afterward. Constables arrested both men. charges of drunkenness and disorderly conduct were filed locally.
Sherman C. Denham, appointed by Governor Dawson, will travel to Washington for the National River and Harbors Congress meeting at the New Willard hotel on the 4th 5th and 6th. He serves as a delegate for West Virginia.
