Telegraphers and companies posture in a waiting game as a Chicago strike shows no clear progress. Companies report stronger business and better position than before, while union officers declare the system hopelessly crippled and peacemakers make no headway.
John Martin of Shinaston sustained a broken leg when his horse, frightened by Benjamin Lipscomb's horse, reared and toppled him over an embankment on the public highway Friday evening. The rider's left leg fractured below the knee in the incident.
Bart Tong of Shinnston sustained serious injuries Friday afternoon after falling fifteen feet from a smokestack at the Ehlen mines. He landed on a hot boiler, badly burning a hip, and suffered facial and body bruises. He was unconscious for several hours and his condition remained dangerous.
The annual conference of the Methodist Protestant church will be held at Buckhannon next week. Executive boards meet early in the week before the conference opens. Rev. Benjamin Store and other ministers from the county will attend. Yearly ministerial assignments will be made at the conference's close.
An August 17 notice states the Union Brotherhood Society plans a large Labor Day picnic on September 2 at Point Breaze park. Speakers include Turalian Consul Catlara of Fairmont and the Tralian band of Monongah will perform.
Mrs. C Morfitt and Witleson travel from Wilsonburg to Fairmont and will soon gain local fame through Mr Morfitt. They will reside in the Masonic Temple area and Mr Morfitt will start a business partnership with Mr A Spates Brady in Fairmont.
Mrs Lucy Ferrell, recently in Detroit, rushes to Pittsburg where her daughter Mary Ferrell has typhoid fever at the home of Mary’s uncle. Many friends here hope for a speedy recovery.
A five story Baltimore warehouse at 207 and 309 West Baltimore Street sustained a fifth floor collapse amid a blaze. Dozens of firefighters were trapped but all were rescued. George T Gill died of his injuries. Damage was about $75,000 in stock and $15,000 in building.
Robert Pinkerton head of the Pinkerton Detective Agency died at sea on August 12 aboard the steamship Bremen while en route to Germany for health reasons.
Sheriff and Mrs John A Flanagan rushed to Salem Saturday morning as Mrs Flanagan, long ill with age related diseases, faced grave fears for recovery. Authorities note the urgent family concern as they monitor her condition closely.
Two foreign workers at Fairmont Coal were transported to Fairmont last night from along the Fairmont and Clarksburg Traction line. One rider rode the 10 o clock car and the other the 9 o'clock. One man has a broken limb and the other a badly lacerated knee. They are treated at the Miners' hospital.
Sam George a Syrian is serving four ten day sentences in county jail for stealing a grip and an umbrella from a traveling salesman on a Baltimore & Ohio train depot sleeper. Mayor Crile sentenced him for nonpayment of a ten dollar fine plus costs after police arrested him at the traveler's request. A companion Syrian, not identified, was released after it was established Sam committed the theft.
George H B Teter died at 1 a m Saturday at his Brushy Fork home after years of illness. He left two sons George B Teter and John K Teter and daughter Miss Sarah Teter. brothers James Teter David and John K Teter. and sister Mrs Isaac Tyson of Lewis County. His wife preceded him in death. A prominent farmer and Unto Methodist church member, he will be buried in the family burial ground after a funeral tomorrow.
Hubbell near Hancock suffered near total ruin as a fire wiped out twenty two dwellings four stores a hotel and the post office. Log losses run to about 190000. In Byron Benjamin Lyle Dodd two year six month old son of Mr and Mrs Benjamin Dodd died Friday afternoon of cholera infantum. Funeral was held Saturday at 2 pm with services at the home and burial in Haymond cemetery.
Judge John W. Mason found the Morgantown Lodge of Elks guilty of dispensing intoxicants to members under state law. A $50 fine plus costs were imposed. judgment was suspended for 60 days to allow a possible appeal to the supreme court on a writ of error. Thirteen indictments were returned against the lodge at the May circuit term.
Hastings man G W Eckelberry, about 32, died in a hospital after being struck by a train on the B&O Short Line near Smithfield last Wednesday. He was an oil field employee and leaves a family. relatives arrive tonight as funeral arrangements are readied.
The city council unanimously passes an anti spitting law to protect public spaces and promote decency. The measure prohibits spitting on sidewalks and public areas with fines from one to ten dollars and possible confinement for nonpayment. first reading completed, law to take effect after final passage.
Stanley J. Swiger, a West Virginia bank bookkeeper, leaves for a vacation visiting Adair City New York and possibly Coney Island. Miss Maggie Pugh worries about the vacancy his absence creates and the ad department suggests a playful “Well groomed man about 30” to fill the dining table role with a courteous demeanor and conversation with a young lady at his left.
Three young lady clerks count ballots for a piano advertising contest run by city merchants. Thousands of votes have been cast signaling strong support for contestants. Adamston lodge Odd Fellows Clarksburg lodge Hik and Lafayette hall lead. a fine piano will go to the top vote getter. Counting is supervised by George Lynch Lloyd Saunders and E W James.
William Heatt, a colored miner, was found dead Friday night on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad near Watson in Marion County. A fatal wound to the back of the head suggested he was struck by a fast-moving train. his brains were exposed. He leaves a wife and four children in Gaston.
Madison Randolph, 75, pioneer citizen of Rockford, died Saturday morning of typhoid fever. Survived by three sons and two daughters, funeral at Seventh Day Baptist Church in Lost Creek Sunday at 11 o’clock. Relatives, neighbors and Seventh Day members to attend.
Mrs. Anna James aged 22 died Friday in a local hospital from complications of diseases after an operation. She was the wife of Charles James of Smithfield and a daughter of Henry Lewis of Smithfield. The body, accompanied by relatives, was taken to Tyronville, Pa for burial.
Wil Clifford, an African American man arrested in Tiptonville Tennessee, confessed to assaulting Mrs. Mary Cowan and casting her body into the river, and to killing another woman the previous year. A mob overtook Constable Burrus near Maple Kentucky, and Clifford was strung up.

Five miners died and six were injured when an elevator cage at a tipple of the Soran Shaft Coal Company overturned today near Johnstown Pennsylvania. The cage fell about four hundred feet.

John Worden, a London, England baritone, was killed when he fell through a hatch into the hold of the steamer John Harper while working as a deck hand in Sandusky. The incident occurred in port on August 17, and Worden died instantly.

A deserter arrested by a civil officer under US law is under federal jurisdiction with no state interference. Concealing a prior enlistment effort constitutes fraudulent enlistment. A deserter in the Philippines under military authority remains within the US for Limitation Act purposes and cannot be released.
