Bell System announces readiness of highway mobile service from Washington to Boston. Motorists with equipped vehicles can call along the route and boats within transmitter range. The system links a 45 mile chain of radiotelephone stations with 28 mile service radii.
An operator at the station nearest a mobile unit sends a rare signal guiding a bell out lamp in that vehicle. The call is unanswered and the light remains on until the operator returns and has not called. Calls from motor vehicles connect to telephone switchboards linked to the nationwide network.
Ten teachers are added at the junior high with new assignments across departments. Migstis Csiffman, earning a BA this year, leads English under Hubert Lesher. Miss Holstein takes guidance with a PhD in hand. Mrs. James H. Blevins shifts to guidance. Miss Huth A. Gabriel moves to home economics. Donald Willard substitutes due to Miss Gladys Poole’s illness, with Poole hoping to return soon.
Trieste’s port strike, halted for 24 hours, ended after a midnight conference with AMS officials and union leaders. The Sin dacati Union and the Camera Del Lavoro claimed moral victories as Allied authorities praised the settlement. The non-Communist Camera Del Lavoro did not participate.
