Employee of Solum Held for Assault and Strangling
Patrick Downey, 31, an employee of a state sane asylum, was held without bail for grand jury action on charges of assaulting and strangling seven year old Rita Lezzari. Downey, father of two, was arrested while attempting to move his car from a ditch near the road where the child’s naked body was found after an all night search. He signed a statement admitting the attack and strangulation with a handkerchief to silence her screams. Downey waived arraignment and faced speedy prosecution. Rita had been missing since yesterday afternoon after being sent to borrow a car pump. a search found undergarments believed to be hers and later her body. Downey claimed amnesia about the location involved. Authorities planned to present the case to the grand jury tomorrow.
