In Philadelphia a federal court trial of Joel D. Kerper, the so called society bootlegger, heard that patrons paid high sums for liquor they believed imported. A chemist testified the whiskey was artificial colored alcohol with gin flavor, not pre war stock. Gardner Cassatt and Charles Wheeler testified paying 70 to 92 dollars per case for gin champagne Scotch and Bacardi rum. Harold Smith said he arranged liquor for his mother and paid 400 for two cases delivered as medicinal stock.
