Grain Prices Listed Again Show State Quoted Averages

With the new corn crop moving in, the State Department of Markets reports last week’s average quotations for the region. Barley down two cents to 96 cents, wheat at 1.93, oats up one cent to 77 cents. Retail cash prices for feeds include coarse cracked corn 78.33, standard bran 58.00, standard middlings 61.50, meat scrap 88.50, alfalfa meal 66.50, dairy feeds 71.00, 22 percent dairy feed 80.33, laying mash 82.67, coarse scratch feed 80.67, soybean oil meal 77.00, hog feed 78.67, hog supplement 93.33.

English To Head Boy Scout Drive In Morgan County

Burton English of Berkeley Springs has been named chair of the Boy Scout fund drive for the Shenandoah Area Council. The drive starts Oct 11 to raise 1000 dollars in Morgan County, covering three Eastern Panhandle counties with Rock Enon camp in nearby Gore, Virginia, used by troops in summer.

Lightning Strike Damages Myers Warehouse Fire

Lightning struck the J. W. Myers warehouse on North Prospect Street last night. The fire damaged stock inside after a power lead in cable was involved. Two fire alarms were triggered one from a box and one by a telephone alarm.

Symphony Group Grows Inactive in Chambersburg

The Cumberland Valley Symphony, indirect descendant of the Hagerstown orchestra, will not operate this coming season. It has held concerts in Chambersburg with many former members, suspended after World War II, and faces loss of conductor Hugh Alan Gault plus difficulty securing personnel and weak attendance at last spring's concert.

Just for Kicks Teens Jump From Bus Window

Two teen aged boys leaped from a city bus window as a police patrol car arrived. They claimed to do it for kicks to avoid paying the extra nickel at the end of the ride. Police escorted them to the station for handling.

John Branch Wins Army Commission and Seeks Dual Career

John Branch, a Morgan State College graduate, earned his Army commission in June and plans a 20 year Army career with hopes to blend investigation work with service. He will train at Camp Fuji and Oaklands Army Air Terminal after brief indoctrination in North Carolina, with family support as his younger brother Marshall serves in Japan.
