Detroit observers note production has surged past year’s shortages with record output and strong demand. Some buyers dropped from the market as used-car values fell, while manufacturers anticipate cuts in October and continued gains through year end.
In New York on September 24 the American League standings show the New York Yankees two games ahead of Boston after a split with Washington. Quakertown police searched for a visitor who left a suitcase with a Luger pistol in the hospital room of 24 year old University of Pennsylvania instructor George W. Jarrett. Jarrett died of a self inflicted gunshot wound after a car crash on Bethlehem Pike.
Senators Millard Tydings and Herbert R. O'Conor will attend with Mrs. India Edwards executive director of the Women’s Division of the Democratic National Committee and Mrs. John L. Whitehurst the DNC woman from Maryland. Five counties of the Sixth District send large delegations with party leaders. C. William Hetzer of Washington County Central Committee acts as toastmaster.
Baltimore September 24 uP Federal Judge W Calvin Chesnut sentenced Sauth Fehiden to two years imprisonment for income tax evasion. The former broker was fined 100. Prosecutors said he owed 1842 taxes and other unpaid income tax for later years plus uncollected prohibition fines. He was convicted by a jury yesterday. The government charged he short changed Internal Revenue collectors by 26000 in 1943 taxes.
