Pamir Sinks Amid Storms. Lifeboats Found in Atlantic
Two empty lifeboats and a raft were found far out in the Atlantic as the 3,102-ton German sailing ship Pamir, carrying about 90 aboard, was sunk in a raging storm stirred by Hurricane Carrie. Rescue planes and ships scoured the mid Atlantic after the Pamir radioed it was sinking 600 miles west of the Azores. The vessel sailed from Buenos Aires to Hamburg with cadets aboard and was registered in Luebeck. Coast Guard and allied ships converged on the last reported position as weather hampered search efforts.

Four miners trapped after Marianna mine blast in Washington PA

Driving Arrests In City Show Big Increase
Driving violation arrests by the Hagerstown Police Department rose 35 percent in August over July, with 143 arrests versus 107. Through August this year there were 456 accidents, 127 injuries, and two deaths, up from 430 accidents, 120 injuries, and one death in the prior year. Of the 143 drivers, 15 were released. 13 were charged with drunken driving, with six guilty, six acquitted, one held open. Twenty seven cited for speeding. nineteen for failing to obey traffic signs.
