A 9 year old Venezuelan girl Magdalina Urdaneto of Caracas was struck by a stray bullet and died at St. Clare's Hospital after a melee in the El Prado Restaurant on 8th Avenue near List Street. A 25 year old Louis Rodriguez was wounded in the shoulder. Police arrested one man and sought another gunman.
Congressman John R. Foley plans a morning tour of the city and an afternoon tour of the county. He will present a 50 star flag at the Aigion Apparel plant at 11:30 tomorrow. Foley is expected to visit Hagerstown and Washington in sequence.
A convicted robber, Roland Lopez, 27, escaped from a Chuck Wilson prison to attend his stepson’s funeral in Pomona. He appeared at the service with hands manacled beside detectives, thanked officers for the chance to see his son before he died, then was returned to prison to face an escape charge.
Three Hagerstown police officers Alton Baker and Comer faced a Board of Public Works hearing at City Hall at 4 30 PM after suspension for conduct unbecoming an officer. Alton reportedly submitted resignation. Baker and Comer have varying lengths of service on the force.
The Washington County Liquor Board denied a Class D whiskey license for Prospect Tavern at 636-38 N Prospect St. An appeal filed by Frank J. Kroeger Jr. through attorney Paul Ottinger claims unlawful procedures and challenges the board's proximity rationale.
Marshall Dillon of Pleasantville in the Yarrowsburg area is hospitalized in Washington County after a stroke. His wife, already partially crippled from a past accident, was awakened by strange helicopter flights and noises, then assisted her husband as he collapsed and was taken for treatment.
A four engine U S Marine transport plane with 29 on board crashed into the sea 180 miles southeast of Okinawa. Rescue ships found no survivors as debris and dye markers were reported scattered over a wide area. The DC6 R5D transport carried 23 passengers and 6 crew from Atsugi Japan to Subic Point Philippines, and three bodies were sighted with no life signs.
St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring will build a two story brick parish education building adjoining the church on S Martin Street. The project estimated at 90000 dollars aims to raise 75000 dollars next month. The addition will house Sunday School classrooms and other educational facilities with remodeling of the basement. The current parish house across the street bought in 1954 will be sold after the new building is completed. Campaign workers classes will precede the drive led by Rev Raymond Miller and general chairman Charles W Clopper Sr.
President Eisenhower at the United Nations General Assembly calls on the Soviet Union to engage in immediate disarmament talks to scrap all nuclear weapons while U.N. inspection ensures space launches are peaceful. He warns that uninspected disarmament would raise war risk and pledges U.S. aid for Africa under U.N. auspices as he criticizes Soviet conduct in Congo. Khrushchev to speak Friday, Macmillan to appear later.
Senator Kennedy lays out a farm program to raise living standards and parity for farmers through supply management, local administration, and credit reforms. He calls for wage-like parity, co op control of supply, modernization of farm agencies, and a special program for low production farmers, tied to a campaign speech at the National Plowing Contest.
Washington County conducts a special Friday drive to register voters dropped for failure to vote in five years. George Smith, Non-Partisan Registration chair, says 3 500 names were removed per Board of Election Supervisors figures. Volunteers will distribute literature downtown in Hagerstown and escort unregistered voters to the Election Board office open until 9 p m Friday. The 1959 Legislature authorized removal of nonvoters. 868 Democrats 612 Republicans and 13 Independents were dropped. Registration deadline is Monday, September 26. Election Board sent e cards to notify affected individuals that their names would be dropped. Many contacted did not know they had been dropped.
The St Luke's Episcopal Church near Brownsville faced repeated snake sightings and killings on its lawn and near the building. Reports include copperheads found on the grounds, a black snake peering through a wall window, and a rattlesnake hole in the adjacent cemetery grave area.
Hagerstown and western Maryland expect fair conditions tonight with lows 55 to 60. Friday should be partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers possible. Saturday brings scattered showers and cooler air. Eastern Maryland and the Eastern Shore stay fair tonight with lows 55 to 65 and continue fair and warm Friday. Saturday brings scattered showers and warm conditions. In eastern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, expect mostly fair tonight and Friday with Friday highs in the 70s. Lows range from 55 to 60 in northern areas and 60s in southern areas, while western points see 57 to 62. Friday will be partly cloudy and somewhat warmer with a chance of afternoon showers.
