Oakland Maryland September 21 Shot in a running gun battle with town and county officers William McIntire 21 year old negro was captured in a blind alley after a pursuit from a department store where six suitcases held coats dresses and apparel were found He was lodged in county jail charged with robbery and claimed Cumberland as home Police said he fired at officers and was wounded in the foot a pistol with six empty cartridges lay beside him
Postmaster General James A. Farley urged Congress and New York legislators to stop the secret collection and use of a large Republican fund to influence elections. He said the Republican National Committee has formed a private corporation to conceal contributors, and warned against allowing such concealment to shield benefactors and their influence over reforms backed by Democratic leadership.
Kendall Hill and Harry Jones, Perryville men, are charged with slaying Baltimore taxi driver Albert Atwell. Mob threats led to their transfer to Baltimore jail under guard from Bel Air. They were captured near Conowingo after Hill attempted to draw a pistol. Jones later admitted taking part in a holdup and robbery.
John Barrymore, famed screen lover, continues his cross country serial "You chase me, but I won't talk" heading west from Chicago. Elaine Barrie, 20, his former protege and current "the Huntress," appears to be involved as the tale unfolds.

Bedford Pennsylvania September 21 Hundreds of searchers tramped into the mountains peering behind every bush for two year old Paul Gouchener. His parents said they were unalarmed until he failed to come home. More than 700 citizens joined with state and county officers in a hunt over the mountain side. A squad of CCC workers carried on the search through the night without result.
Boy Scouts from Portland asked about a dozen Philadelphians to point them to old Christ Church and the graves of Benjamin Franklin Betsy Ross and the Penn family. A police officer located the directions in his small directory.
Cambridge Maryland September 21 fire destroyed a large stock of canned goods and damaged fire trucks at the old Woolford and Smith mill which had been converted into a warehouse by Lonie Slacum.
Havre de Grace Md Sept 21 Senator Millard E Tydings says he has bought Oakington farms overlooking the Chesapeake Bay near here and will make it his home after remodeling The estate covers about 600 acres and an investment of roughly 1 009 000 Designed by Stanford White for James I Breese it passed to Commodore Leonard Richards and was remodeled at a cost over 1006 000 The price paid to the Richards estate was about 52 000 Extensive work is planned before the mansion is livable and occupancy date not set.
Washington September 21 The United Mine Workers threaten a Monday morning coal strike in the bituminous fields as wage and hour talks with Appalachian producers fail for the sixth time in six months. The present contract expires Sunday midnight and government efforts to avert the walkout remain undisclosed. The miners seek higher daily and tonnage wages and yardage increases while operators offer to extend the current scale until April 1.
Homer E. Tabler, chairman of the State Roads Commission, faced a question from State Senator Raymond Kennedy about highway funds. Kennedy said about 12 million dollars are available or in prospect for road building under Federal or State programs, with 3.75 million immediately available. Tabler declined to comment when shown a table outlining fund sources.
In Mountain Grove Missouri two women were killed and a man slightly wounded in a shooting last night. The victims were Lola Wilhide and her mother Mattie Hutsell, aged around 80 and blind. James Wilhite, Lola’s husband, suffered a minor scalp wound. Sheriff Claxton said the suspect, Keda Lawson, claimed Wilhite fired after returning to a home he had left following threats and quarrels.
Lieut. Brady J. Dayton U S N retired was appointed acting branch director of the Works Progress Administration. Francis H. Dryden state WPA head announced the appointment today in Baltimore.
At Byrd Airport in Richmond Col Charles Lindbergh swooped in at 8:15 a m to pick up his friend Hr F Guggenheim former ambassador to Cuba then lifted off toward the north without leaving the cockpit.
Four men died and six more were hospitalized after two mining accidents in the southwest. At the Black Mountain mine near Searchlight Nevada Mason Reid 26 and Phil Pridgeon about 30 were killed by a premature dynamite blast. At the Starlight mine near Mojave California John Chovich 35 and John Bukovac 31 died from poisonous gas as rescuers were affected by fumes.
Fourteen farmers in St. Joseph Missouri pleaded guilty in federal court to contempt of court and interference with federal officers for halting a farm foreclosure sale at Plattsburg on August 15. Defense attorneys announced that seven more had withdrawn not guilty pleas and now admit guilt on both charges.
Chicago police questioned Niels Larsen and his wife Vivian Larsen after eight year old Jean Larsen was found tied hand and foot and emaciated in her home bathroom. An anonymous call led Sergeant I Brandt to the scene. authorities seek motive for the alleged treatment.
Harry C. Whitehill, 60, editor and publisher of the Waterbury Record and former collector of customs at St. Albans, died today at his Waterbury home after a brief illness.

Charles E. Wetzel, advertising manager of United Gas Improvement Company in Philadelphia, was found beaten to death today along the Little Lehigh River. He was beaten over the head. one shoe and a bloody handkerchief lay near the body, a short distance from an incinerating plant.
The Board of Liquor License Commissioners suspended indefinitely the license of Earl J. Bentzel at 24100 block of Virginia Avenue for permitting consumption after midnight on September 7. The decision followed a hearing and charged the establishment with violating the closing hour rule.
Robert Blackburn aged 65, once a representative from Kentucky's seventh district, died last night at the United States Veterans Hospital in Lenon. The obituary notes his service in Congress and his longtime ties to Kentucky politics.

In Westminster Maryland Judge F Neale Parke dismissed the appeal by George F Nunier to remove a record stamp from his driver's license and end probation. The decision upheld the Motor Vehicles Commissioner, represented by W Dana Ready and Walter J Rudy.
