Deaths, weddings, travels, and students populate the Downsville column. Ammon Watts funeral in York, Pa, relatives visit Baltimore and Funkstown, marriages like Helen Ambrose to Bruce Spickler, and numerous youths heading to college or stores to work.
Clerks at the Washington County court issued about sixteen marriage licenses over the weekend. Licenses were taken by couples from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and local residents, including several pairs such as Lester Fetwell and Vivian Wimmer and Lillian Row with Leroy Smith.
Mrs. W. Raymond Root and Mrs. Jesse Howell hosted a birthday dinner at Mrs. Howell's Williamsport home. It honored Mr. Root on his 25th birthday and Phyllis Howell and the couple’s son turning five. Guests included relatives such as Mrs. BB. Bennett and George Swartz, with gifts given to the honorees.
An "Old Clothes" dance will be held Wednesday evening September 20 at the South Hagerstown Fire Company Hall to aid the King's Daughters. Attendees may donate usable clothing and wearables for winter relief, with round and square dancing and music by the Blue Ridge Mountain Boys.
The Royal Neighbors of America celebrate their ninth anniversary on Wednesday at 7 30 pm in Odd Fellows Hall. An evening program features official guests short talks group singing fancy drills vocal numbers and dances with comic songs. Refreshments follow and the hall is decorated in lodge colors. members and friends are urged to attend.
Wilbur F. Swanson presented a refined organ recital at St. Johns Lutheran last night. The pupil of St Olafs now plans to study at Eastman School of Music. The Western District Luther Leagues sponsored the event drawing a large youth and music-loving crowd. Rev J William Ott and Rev J Edward Harms assisted. Mrs L M Wertz sang the offertory.
Scout Troop No. 10 restarts its fall and winter activities with hikes overnight camps a father and scout banquet membership campaigns and parents night planned. Meetings are Fridays at 7 pm in the troop room at Trinity Lutheran Church. Officers include Scout Master Fred P Entler Assistant Scoutmaster Claude G Minnich Junior Assistant Scoutmaster Robert Paxson Senior Patrol Leader Deen Marquart and others. The Troop Committee lists Roy Snyder chairman Conrad Hausrauth and Edgar Gardenhour.
Special Service featuring D E Johnson a Canadian evangelist and D C Criminio an Italian singer at the Church of God Summit Avenue tonight at 7 30. It will be their only city appearance. They recently studied at John Davis Bible School Binghamton NY. Martin Gurkha a ministerial student from Czechoslovakia spoke yesterday at the Church of God on European mission work.
A new shop named Four and Twenty Tailors will open Tuesday in the Hotel Alexander building, formerly Alexander Flower Shop, under Miss Mary La Pier Howard with Mrs. William J. Cavanaugh assisting. The store features nursery rhyme decor by Mrs. Philo Statton and wall illustrations by Geo. D. Reynolds, selling children’s clothing, toys, and tea items for grown-ups at moderate prices.
The Halfway School Parent Teachers Association resumes fall and winter activities with a 7:45 PM meeting at the school. Mrs Sorrell Srelman presides at the business session on the year's program. Alice M Quick speaks on School and Gratton Mason on Home followed by a faculty reception and community singing.
The Hagerstown Chapter Order of DeMolay will hold a private initiation Tuesday evening at 7 30 P M in the Masonic Temple. Howard Messeramith Master Councilor will direct the conferral of the first and second degrees.
At last night’s meeting the Christian Endeavor Society installed the newly elected officers for the coming year. President David Schnebly and vice president Alice Hoffman lead a slate that includes recording secretary Marion Warrenfeltz and corresponding secretary Catherine Berger. Treasurer Iryan Beard, pianist Rebecca Feltz, and assistant pianist Mary Brown Fesperman complete the list.
