Early morning incident on Church Street involved Harold Rugene Talhelm and passenger George Mixter from Dunn Irvin Avenue. Megistrate William J. Dwyer criticized Shepherd College officials after a case involving 17 year old Charles Thomas Stottler who obtained liquor in West Virginia and got drunk. Dwyer lamented claims about Maryland drinkers and condemned local officials over the drinking rights controversy in Sharpsburg.
Maryland and the National Park Service will restore the Dunkard Church at Antietam battlefield as part of Civil War centennial observances. Maryland will provide 35000 dollars to restore the church to its original appearance while the Park Service supplies site work and oversees construction. The federal government will operate and maintain the church after completion.
The sheriff's office received complaints about gunfire behind Pangborn Blvd and near Pangborn School. Shooters, described as Pangborn Blvd housewives, use a chipped wing pigeon as a target in the Sam Lane farm field behind their homes. Deputies note the firing is 100 yards from homes and 250 yards from the school and poses danger to children and residents. Deputies will monitor the area.
