In Paris on September 15 the franc fell sharply to 29.35 per dollar and 144.75 per pound, its lowest in over a decade. The stabilization fund abandoned support efforts, with experts predicting further declines toward 30 per dollar. The decline continues a long devaluation trend since 1928.
Last night the Street Board discussed Summit avenue and Jonathan street traffic changes. An impromptu City Hall meeting with City officials and Captain Carl McCleary produced tentative rules awaiting Street Commissioners approval. Parking rules vary by block with west-side parking on Summit Antietam to Lee and Antietam to Washington while Jonathan street allows parking on both sides.
The early fall day opened at 42 degrees with a cold start. By 10:30 a.m. the temperature had risen to 69 degrees as conditions shifted in the cool morning to a milder late morning.
Ogden Utah September 15 city judge Hyrum Nell nap sentenced a man to 30 days in jail for drunken driving noting three Hs Hooch haste and hug gin cause 85 percent of auto accidents.

Mrs. Mary Weller of Elizabeth street was wounded in the leg by a two calibre cartridge that exploded after entering rubbish she was burning in the yard. She received medical attention and a later bullet removal was planned.
A major horse show featuring top horses from Maryland Virginia and Pennsylvania will unfold tomorrow afternoon at the National Antietam Exhibition. Nine classes begin at 1 pm including three gaited and five gaited open saddles jumping pony riding and driving events plus a touch and out. The historic pageant On Wings of Time horses will parade before the grand stand. Judges named are William Cunningham Clyde Brewer and C James Barnett with show committee members Al Foreman Preston Howard and Robert Boerner.
Newark, Sept 15. Mrs Nelson Tokk 97, who witnessed Lincoln's assassination, was struck by a backing car on Broad street as she stepped off a curb. She refused aid from emergency squad and radio police and walked home with another motorist.
Westminster September 15 The International Ladies Garment Workers union files suit in circuit court challenging a city ordinance regulating picketing as unconstitutional It seeks an injunction to prevent interference arrest or fines while picketing remains peaceful and within lawful activities
Maritime commission acts swiftly to enforce a partial embargo on arms shipments to the Sino Japanese War theater. President Roosevelt bans 37 government owned ships from carrying munitions to the Orient while private operators are warned of risks. the Wichita carrying 19 airplanes is under review as a potential first application.
Attorney General Thomas P. Cheney said Howard Long of Alton confessed to killing 19 year old Mark Neville Jensen on September 10. The jack used in the attack was recovered at Long’s home. Jensen’s battered body was found on a Guilford road. Police testified Long said he struck Jensen with the jack and everything went black. Authorities believe the death followed a failed attempt to resist a sex assault.
Pittsburgh engineer Nathan Story, Smithsonian member, heads to Tucson to search for the legendary mine with the iron door. He expects to find $90 million in gold reportedly hidden four centuries ago by Spanish priests behind the Escalante mine door. Story owns a quarter of 40 acres tied to the site, with Apache land and a Phoenix partner, C. W. McKee, already pursuing the legend for 13 years.
In Port Angeles on September 13 Teller B N Phillips suggested Warren Willam Krech of Hollywood wire his bank for funds when he presented a check. Other bank employees later identified the stranger as Warren William, vacationing film star.
Mrs Ella Grimm of East Franklin Street bought a new garbage can yesterday and placed it on the pavement in front of her home. Today someone else bought a new can.
Antietam crowds are expected in Sharpsburg for the National Antietam Commemoration climax reenacting the Bloody Lane fight. Veterans from several states join observers for National Capital Day with Melvin C. Hazen, mayor of Washington, as guest of honor. veterans arrive from West Virginia and Missouri.
A truck carrying silk and tires from Cumberland to Baltimore hit a pole near Ellicott City, ignited, and burned, destroying a $20,000 cargo. The driver escaped through the roof and reached Ellicott City fire company unharmed as the line outage affected service.
Lester Yates of Huntington West Virginia was sentenced to three months in the House of Correction by Justice John D. Dunn in city court after stealing several new leather purses from J. E. Crider, a leather goods maker. He claimed he bought a purse and did not know it was stolen.
Maude L. Baker receives an absolute divorce from Clifford L. Baker in the ruling by Judge Frank G. Wagaman. Attorney John J. Allen appeared for the plaintiff, outlining the case and finalizing the decree.
Atlantic City dispatch reports Governor Olin D Johnston saying he never drank a drop in his life at the annual governors conference. Clyde R Hoey of North Carolina adds he never hit the bottle either. Both leaders denied alcohol use amid the gathering.
Baltimore September 15 Attorney General Herbert R OConor will address the Washington county Kiwanis club tomorrow for the Battle of Antietam anniversary celebration He will speak on the constitution after the luncheon and will host attorneys general from eight other states attending the event.
Mann Smith, a 15 year old black youth from Marion North Carolina, was sent to Raleigh to await execution for raping a 12 year old white girl. A Superior court jury convicted him after five minutes of deliberation and Judge Felix Alley set the date to be gassed on October 15.
Due to a holiday for a Sharpsburg battle re enactment the mayor will hold office hours tomorrow from 9 to 11 am instead of Friday. The notice specifies a temporary shift for Friday observed holiday impacts.
President Roosevelt told reporters he had not received any information about Justice Hugo L. Black’s alleged Klan membership before his Supreme Court appointment. He said he did not know if the Justice Department investigated Black and would offer no further comment until Black returns from Europe.
Police have no clues in a six room house at 36 Madison avenue where all furnishings except a piano were stolen. A gas stove was disconnected and removed. Owner Mary S Thorpe, back from Albany, reports losses over $500 insured. Mrs Thorpe staying with F C Cooper on Sharpburg Pike during investigation.
Rain replenishes the mountain supply but Edge Mont reservoir remains short. Albert Heard of the Water Department said Hagerstown mains will not run on river water until an additional 30 million gallons are added daily. Current supply draws from the Potomac River and city usage threatens reservoir levels.
Due to Commissioner Frank R Beard illness the State Roads Commission and County Board of Commissioners conference scheduled for Baltimore today is postponed until next week. The meeting aimed to discuss the county road plans for the ensuing year.
From west of Peiping to the Tientsin-Nanking railroad, Japanese troops numbering about 125 000 pressed Chinese positions. The northern Chinese army of nearly 500 000 was believed to be withdrawing to prepared lines, forming a solid defensive wall as both sides reported gains along the 100 mile front. The long undeclared war enters a bitter, high intensity phase with hundreds of thousands building a modern defense and mobile detachments delaying the advance.
Geneva September 15. Japan will refuse friendly mediation by the League of Nations in the Sino-Japanese conflict. Envoy Eliji Aman told AP that Japan would brook no interference in the Far East crisis and would not accept a temporary league council seat if invited to defend itself.

Annapolis notes that 43 corporations paid 934.26 in state income taxes at the office of State Comptroller William S. Gordy Jr. The returns cover fiscal years ending between January 1 and June 30. A one half of one percent relief tax was applied under the relief revenue program. Individual 1937 income taxes are not payable until March 15.
Night prowlers remain active as Mrs. Rider of 500 North Mulberry Street was startled when a man rose from the ground and asked for the man of the house. She reported the incident, and soon after a man asked to borrow money at the J C Grice home on Oak Hill Avenue.

Chicago police report a 24 year old father of two, Robert Conroy, confessed to the brutal rape and torture of Miss Anna Brasy, a 39 year old choir singer. Identified by the victim, Conroy was arrested after a tip. The attack occurred last November 21 as Brasy slept, leading to weeks in hospital care.
Meriden police search for a burglar described as having x ray eyes after a theft of 34.70 from John Socco. Socco reportedly split the money into small piles and hid it in several places during the night.
