A rock avalanche from Rogue mountain struck Leon Lake in Soen Norway wiping out a tourist town. The death toll reached 73 with fears it may rise. About 20 survivors found. many injured. homes and fields washed away. a steamboat was displaced miles from its former site. Local farmer lost his family.
Magnus Johnson a Swedish immigrant who became Minnesota state legislator, U S Senator and Congress member died after a pneumonia battle. He was 65 next Saturday and had a long career in the Farmer-Labor movement and politics. He led in a 1932 congressional race with 388,615 votes.
A Bearwin sportster cabin monoplane crashed at Conway airport near Rochester, killing Sidney R. Messner of Pittsburgh on arrival at Rochester General Hospital and critically injuring Charles Kropf of Bellevue. Witnesses saw the plane circle twice before diving into trees.
Albert E. Reynolds age 64 living on Maryland avenue suffered a broken leg and minor injuries after being struck by a car driven by John W. Fouke Jr. on Prospect street near City Park Circle Sunday around 4 am. Patrolmen Karn and Lillard ruled the accident unavoidable and Reynolds was taken to Washington County Hospital.
A. B. Curry 36 of Sanger Tex nearly died after his roadster hit a city bus in front of a funeral home. Undertaker Julian Holtz urged Curry to press a neck wound until reaching hospital. Doctors said Curry would recover.
Miss Alice M. Frankenburger a 34 year old government worker in Washington D C leaped or fell seventy one feet from the Masontown bridge into the Monongahela River Ed Hathaway of Carmichaels witnessed the event and summoned Alec Scoomick of Masontown who recovered the body She was still breathing when brought to the surface but died despite artificial respiration.
The representative supported Roosevelt and backed most New Deal measures. He was defeated for re election in 1934 by Harold Knutson and earlier, in the primary last June, lost the Farmer Labor gubernatorial nomination to Senator Elmer Benson.
Edith Maxwell, a 22 year old mountain school teacher from Pound Virginia, was granted a new trial by the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals on her murder conviction. She has been held without bond in Lee County Jail since her 2023 conviction and faces a 21 year penitentiary sentence. Defense attorneys said they would seek release pending the new trial.
The convicted defendant remains jailed on bond while awaiting a hearing date. Trial judge H A W Skeen has twice denied appeals for release on bail since the conviction and before the State Supreme Court acted.
A truck operated by Floyd F. Nelson of the 300 block Jefferson street was struck by a hit and run driver at Antietam and Mulberry streets around 8 o clock last night. Nelson was charged with operating a vehicle on an instructors permit by Patrolmen Kiser and Ray. Police predicted an early arrest of the hit and run driver.
President Roosevelt completed a 26 hour Potomac river cruise with Attorney General Cummings and Secretary Ickes returning to the White House. He planned a Harvard tercentenary address in Cambridge followed by Hyde Park and a Syracuse convention appearance before resuming work on his campaign swing.
