Near the stables at the Fairgrounds yesterday afternoon about six city officers raided a dice game called the Costa Rica four dice risk with a six as value. About 15 men participated. four arrested, two released, two posted collateral for a hearing.
A Hagerstown soldier Corporal Maurice L. Messersmith helped uncover a last Japanese survivor on Attu after a fox-hunt outing. His friend found a cave with a bayonet, water bottles and blankets. The crew later recaptured the Japanese, who wore two right shoes.
Cpl. Messersmith, born and raised in Hagerstown, is 28 and joined the Army about two years ago after working for Western Maryland Railroad. He previously lived at 160 Madison Avenue.
A four hour blaze at Pennsylvania Railroad Broad Street station in Philadelphia wrecked 15 tracks, causing $250000 damage. More than 350 people, mostly firemen and civilian protection workers, were injured, several seriously, as eight alarms fought the flames begun in an engine room under the west approach.
