London reports that after two U boat attacks and an air raid in a storm the bulk of a British Atlantic convoy reached port with eight ships lost. Two Hurt In Early Crash At County Intersection
Two men were injured, not seriously, when their car rolled over twice at 1 am near Leitersburg and Paramount roads north of the city. Driver Joseph Sweeney, 19, Avalon Road, suffered head injuries and bruises. passenger Harry Schlotterbeck, 20, Hagerstown Rt. 2, had facial cuts. Both treated at Washington County Hospital. Sweeney said he tried to pass a car on the left, swerving caused the rollover. Earlier, the Chevrolet truck of William Glady, 45, Germantown, Md., and the car of Daniel Smith, 21, West Franklin Street, collided at the War Memorial intersection in Funkstown. both drivers escaped injuries. Harry Rooney a 60 year old Hancock retiree was fined five dollars and costs after arraignment before Magistrate J A Cahill on a disorderly conduct charge. He admitted attempting to fix an air brake valve on a Western Maryland freight train after it appeared broken and the train refused to move due to released air. Officers testified Rooney was apparently intoxicated. The magistrate admonished him that reporting to railroad authorities is proper and not to meddle with equipment.
