Recall of the 1812 Defeat Celebrated Quietly in Maryland

Maryland marked Defenders Day with no parades as the 124th anniversary of Lord Wellington’s troops landing at North Point loomed. Fort McHenry drew visitors, while the War of 1812 Society planned an informal banquet to honor Brig. Gen. John Stricker and the militiamen who met the British after their attack on Bladensburg. Public events were dampened by rain and primary elections.

Bombardment at Fort McHenry inspired the National Anthem

The landing by British forces under Major General Ross echoed 124 years ago as 1,760 militiamen contested the city of Baltimore. The fleet failed to pass Fort McHenry, though its guns outranged the fort, while captive Francis Scott Key aboard a ship witnessed the bombardment that inspired him to write the National Anthem.

Clifton L. Riggs Dies In Baltimore

Clifton Levering Riggs 73 longtime Maryland civic figure and former Adjutant General died in Baltimore from heart disease. He served 1904 to 1908 and helped police the great Baltimore fire. A Spanish American War veteran he later held Philippine Island posts as Secretary of Commerce and Police 1913 to 1935. He returned to real estate and led the Real Estate Board in 1937. Survived by a son a daughter and four brothers.
