Miss Black America Crowned in TV Telecast
Claire Ford, an 18 year old aspiring lawyer from Memphis Tennessee, won the Miss Black America title in a televised event in Santa Monica California. The Memphis contestant captured the top prize of ten thousand dollars and earned a Universal Pictures NBC screen test. Mary Bentley of Indianapolis claimed second runner up and the talent prize for a “Lean on Me” rendition. Additional runners up included Nios Maria Lucas of Dayton Ohio and Johndrea Whitmore of Nebraska.
