A predawn settlement ends a 12 day strike that halted the Pennsylvania Railroad. About 20,000 workers in two unions gain job security protections and a severance plan, while wages are not changed. Partial service to begin soon with safety and reliability emphasis.
Senator John F Kennedy campaigned in Texas addressing religious bias as a major issue. Lyndon Johnson said religion is the Republicans main Texas weapon while polls show Kennedy ahead of Nixon but undecided voters remain. Kennedy declined to a cut off date on discussing religion, fearing late charges against his Catholic faith.
Hurricane Donna battered Maryland with roofs ripped from buildings and uprooted trees as the storm moved northeast. Ocean City evacuated and more than 3,000 people sought shelter along the Eastern Shore while telephone lines failed and heavy rain intensified. Evacuations continued along Delaware beaches and the Chesapeake Bay side, with Civil Defense reporting 1,200 to 1,500 in Stephen Decatur High School, 900 in Berlin, and 1,000 at Buckingham Elementary School, amid rising tides and limited communications.
About 350 to 400 Pennsy employees in the Hagerstown area, idled by a strike, are being notified operations will restart at midnight. Freight service is slated to resume with no information yet on the single passenger train from New York. A local taxi driver reports a stolen bicycle connected to the strike remains missing.
Vice President Nixon launched his presidential bid at Baltimore Friendship Airport promising to take the peace issue to all 50 states. Rain from Hurricane Donna forced the rally indoors, drawing an estimated 700 to 1,500 supporters as Eisenhower and GOP leaders joined the kickoff. Heavy rains today driven by Hurricane Donna hit Western Maryland with up to an inch and a half in the valley while eastern mountains saw about half as much. The Hagerstown Almanack had forecast pleasant weather for mid September, missing by a day.
The 12 day old Pennsylvania Railroad strike ends with a handshake between Transport Workers Union president Mike Quill and railroad board chairman James M. Symes in Philadelphia. Attending officials join and the sides agree to halt hostilities and resume operations.
Five downtown offices in the Earle Building at 75 W Washington St and 68 W Washington St were burglarized over the weekend. Only the Beneficial Finance Company on 68 W Washington St lost money, about $23.98, as safes were pried open. Other targets included Mc Cauley Covey lawyers, Edna Lumbert Co, Lincoln National Life, and Community Finance Service. desks were pried, a cupboard opened, and at least one desk and mailbox lock disturbed. Damage to safes outweighed cash taken, and the same man is suspected.
A 1957 Chevrolet pickup with an attached Hobart welding machine and an acetylene torch was reported stolen from Central Manufacturing and Welding Works near Oak Ridge Road and Downsville Pike at midnight Friday night.
Hurricane Donna moves northeast toward New York and Long Island with gale winds heavy rain and high tides. Fire Island evacuations total over 4 000 while storm warnings stretch from the Carolinas to New England Coast Guard ships evacuate residents and planes are moved from nearby bases. Police brace for NYC winds to 75 mph and eight to ten foot tides as the storm nears the eastern end of Long Island.
A Sunday afternoon blast from a wood stove demolished the Jamiesons kitchen near Gower's Station. The stove exploded around 3:30 PM as more wood was added, blowing holes in the ceiling and sending a chair through a window. Fireman Percy Blackwell reported the stove ruined, with burners of the nearby electric stove blown out and no clear explanation for the blast.
Mrs McCarren, a longtime hearing aid user from Baltimore County, underwent the stapes replacement procedure at the local hospital. Under local anesthesia the tiny ear bone was replaced with a plastic fiber implant, restoring her hearing significantly. The operation marks a milestone in delicate ear surgery and offers hope to others with progressive deafness.
Hagerstown and western Maryland expect rain ending tonight with clearing and cooler skies. Lows around 50 to 55. Northerly winds 15 to 30 mph today, easing to 15 mph tonight. Eastern shore and southern Maryland see rain ending tonight, then clearing with lows near 60. Tuesday and Wednesday forecast fair and cool with winds turning lighter. West Virginia and southeastern Pennsylvania show fair, cool conditions with similar nightly lows in the 50s.
