The AP reports rampaging flood waters devastating crops and farms across Vietnam and Laos. Hanoi orders flood relief and dam repairs while denying a death toll claim of up to a million from past floods. Saigon cautions against misreading a quoted figure.
U S marshals were ordered by U S District Court Judge Damon J Keith to investigate Pontiac police handling of school bus integration. About 9000 of 24000 pupils are bused as marshals may be sent to enforce the order. Separate bombing case involved six Ku Klux Klansmen bonded at $10,000 each, barred from Pontiac schools, pending federal probe.
The National Council of Churches general board debates a plan to centralize power expand the governing board and boost lay and youth participation while tightening budget control of 16 million. If approved the proposal goes to the December 1972 assembly for final action. The NCC includes 33 member churches totaling about 42 million members, with the Roman Catholic Church and Southern Baptists among nonmembers.
The 20th anniversary of Homewood Church Home Inc at 2750 Virginia Ave Homewood will be observed with a 4 pm Sunday service. Dr E W Ditto and Rev Lawrence N Strunk will participate. The Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren marks its 25th anniversary with services and guest speakers Rev Ora DeLauter and music by the Christian Volunteer Quartet and others. The United Brethren Church hosts missionary speakers and concerts, with details on speakers Woodrow McQaillenay and Rev Kyle Alan McGill. Blair's Valley First Church of God announces Rally Day and a concert by Missionary to Guatemala. St James Lutheran in Uvilla holds annual homecoming with sermon by Dr F H Witmer and a parish picnic. Commemorative services will be held on Sunday at the Antietam National Battlefield Dunker Church in Sharpsburg Maryland with Rev McKinley Calfman presiding The event will feature historic Bible display and historic period worship with choir and Brethren ministers and a reception following the service
U S fighter bombers struck inside North Vietnam for the third time this week. Two phantom jets attacked two airfield sites about two miles north of the demilitarized zone after an unarmed photo plane they escorted came under fire. All U S planes reportedly escaped damage. A Ha Tinh Province report claimed a U S plane was shot down, which a U S spokesman denied.
Corpus Christi dispatch reports remnants of Hurricane Fern bringing heavy rain along the Texas coast. Four inches fell in downtown Corpus Christi with 3 to 6 more expected, tides 3 to 5 feet above normal, and flash flood warnings issued for seven counties. Minor structural damage and power outages affected about 75,000 people as Fern weakened from hurricane to tropical storm near the coast.
A Maryland family of three was killed and another severely injured in a four car crash on U S 301 between Lumberton and Rowland. Linwood Reshore 63 his wife Sadie 8 and their 2 year old grandson Charles Beshore died. The boy's mother Mes Pay Vine Beshore of Priest Hills was driven to Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville in critical condition. Investigating officers reported two other crash victims with less serious injuries.
Capt Ernest Medina, commander at My Lai, loses bid for directed acquittal as Army case moves to the defense. Prosecution contends Medina had knowledge of killings of up to 102 civilians during the March 16, 1968 attack and did not intervene. Defense argues Medina did not know of crimes and ordered a cease fire once aware, with the defense set to begin calling witnesses.
Moscow reports Luna 18 crashed into lunar mountains in the Sea of Fertility. Tass said contact with the probe was cut off after it completed 54 orbits following its Sept. 2 launch.
