Secretary of State Dulles said the Syrian situation may be resolved peacefully though risks exist. He stated the United States would not yield peace at any price and would act only under certain circumstances, without specifying them. He blamed the Soviet Union for pursuing Russia's traditional policy to control the Middle East.
U S Navy spokesman said no American ships near the Syrian coast though the 6th Fleet operates in the Aegean. He suggested some destroyers may have recently cruised the western Mediterranean but none sighted off Syria. The Syrian charge followed Dulles remarks urging Syria to resist Communist influence amid regional tensions.
County government grows into a multi million dollar business with schools absorbing about four of every ten dollars from last year’s collections. The Board spent 2,899,756 on school operation while general property taxes totaled 3,016,649. Almost 3 out of 4 dollars came to schools, with 17,000 students and 700 staff. If no other revenue existed, county operations would exceed tax receipts by about 230,000.
