Caldwell Ohio Sept 8 Commander Jacob H Klein head of the Shenandoah wreck investigation said today all 14 dead crew members were attended to with care. He rebutted claims by father Howard W Sprattley that bodies were neglected and mutilated. Bodies were moved to a barn for protection then wrapped in clean white sheets for burial in Navy uniforms when possible.
Harrison W. Noel a 20 year old former college student and escaped asylum inmate pleaded guilty to kidnapping 6 year old Mary Daly in Montclair New Jersey. Investigators say he may be ordered confined for life if found sane, with a separate murder case pending and a confession reported.
Treated by five of Washington's top lawyers, Juvenile Court Judge Sean R Yourtee faced trial today in city court for driving under the influence. He pleaded not guilty as testimony from multiple witnesses began. The hearing adjourned after roughly twenty minutes with the defense presenting witnesses and the prosecution calling several others.
Brooklyn man Francisco Annello was shot by ex soldier Joseph Rizzuto after Annello mocked Rizzuto in U S Army uniform. Rizzuto emptied his revolver into Annello’s belly and then struck the empty weapon at responders. He claimed Annello called him a clown in uniform.
Maryland health officials warn typhoid fever has reached epidemic levels with August 1925 cases up 41 from August last year. Washington county contributes many cases prompting county nurses to offer free vaccine treatment and urge isolation, disinfection, sanitation, fly control, and responsible home care.
The first cargo of salvaged Shenandoah dirigible debris is loaded for shipment from Caldwell Ohio to Lakehurst New Jersey. The wreck occurred last Thursday, costing 14 crew members their lives. Navy officials indicate the parts will be moved to the naval air station at Lakehurst, the Shenandoah’s home base prior to the loss.
William Rainey aged 70 was assaulted on a road near Martinsburg while returning from market and died at the Martinsburg hospital. A sack of money he carried was stolen by the attackers. No suspects have been identified, and a club used in the assault was found. Rainey’s daughter Mary lives with the Mason family on the Springfield farm near Williamsport.
L. E. Thrasher, manager of the Oklahoma Arkansas Telephone Company, was shot and killed in Potecau Oklahoma. Miss Mayme Fries, chief operator, was seriously wounded by L. E. Carmichael, Thrasher’s partner, after a heated argument between the men.
Samuel M. Reeder a 49 year old truck farmer near Roonsboro was killed after a confrontation with farm hand Joseph Sowers over threats to his family. Sowers says he fired after Reeder pointed a revolver at him. the shot struck Reeder in the forehead ending his life. The family blamed moonshine for the day's events and investigators noted Reeder attempted to reload before the fatal shot. Continued on Page 12.
September 18 emerges as a leading wedding month based on recent certificates issued in Hagerstown. In the last two days, 33 couples obtained marriage licenses, keeping registrar Edward Oswald busy.
Geneva dispatch reports the Allies have decided to invite Germany to a conference on proposed security measures. The move signals readiness for a formal parley to discuss postwar arrangements and potential cooperation on international security.
Tucson, September 8. The Arizona Corporation Commission will decide whether the Southern Paddle Railroad can require a passenger to wear a coat while being served in the dining car. N. A. Pennington of Tucson filed a complaint after a steward reportedly required him to don his coat en route to Phoenix. He notes he wore a new shirt costing $4.98 and argues proper dress.
Decatur, Sept 8. Loula Chedo of the Decatur Three Eye League died after being hit in the head during a morning game in Evansville Indiana. The blow came from pitcher Huser Gray yesterday.
Paris datelines report Professor Charles Richet presenting a paper to the Academy of Sciences stating that raw meat nourishes better than cooked. Experiments with fish show faster growth and higher mortality on cooked meat, supporting raw diet as closer to ancestral animal life. Richet, Nobel laureate in medicine 1913.
Attendance at the opening day of school in Anderstown and Washington county rose an estimated 10 to 15 percent over last season with 12,701 pupils in class. The district added teachers to handle growth and seating capacity. Elementary turnout favored boys, while high schools saw more girls, with overall elementary pupils about five times the high school enrollment.
Catherine Stevens aged 108 years 7 months died in Belle Fourche South Dakota after a two week illness.
Mrs C B Cook president of Benton County WCTU was killed by an unidentified shooter at her home in Vale, Iowa. The crime occurred about 12 30 am as she sewed, a bullet shattered a window and she died an hour and a half later. Local activists suspect anti liquor enforcement motives though no official cause is released. Her husband runs a local gas company.
Wong Tip, a Chinese laundry worker, died at University Hospital after a nearly hour long gun battle with police last Saturday on West Mulberry Street. The incident began when police investigated a report that a robbery had occurred at Jun Chung’s laundry and Chisese was enraged, firing on officers as they arrived.
In Hornell New York on September 8 the Erie Railroad shopmen in Carmen and surrounding areas were laid off after a strike in the Anthracite region at Pennsylvania. About 1090 men in the car shops lost work following the strike order calling out 1530 miners.
Complete plans for the city’s water plant above Williamsport along the Potomac River have been announced. The first contract goes to PILL Construction Co of Pittsburgh and construction is nearing completion. The building is a brick and steel treetop structure with three wings, housing pumps, switch boards, laboratories, and heating by vapor vacuum boiler. The plant aims to supply water for a town twice the size of Heraldstown and is expected to take about two years to complete.
