New Building Underway at Roxbury Penal Farm
The first stone of the main inmate building at the Maryland Gate Penitentiary Farm in Roxbury was laid by Superintendent Jai T. Kearns. The complex will include administration, living quarters, educational facilities, auditorium, kitchen and laundry to house about 600 inmates. Excavation for the structure ran through summer. five barracks including the superintendent’s residence are nearing occupancy. Population at the farm tops 275 inmates with a summer peak of 295. quarantine from influenza has ended and visitors are allowed. No flu cases occurred over the weekend with only minor sickness keeping about eight men off duty at times.

More Cattle Arrive Here From West Drought Areas
Eleven more cars of cattle from the drought regions arrived in Washington County to be cared for by farmers. Three cars with 114 cattle had previously arrived and were placed on farms, with government compensation for pasture use. The cattle are young and in good condition, unlike some emaciated herds seen in photos. The latest shipments reached Hancock, Big Pool, Charlton, Williamsport, Hagerstown, Smithburg and Weverton. Nine more cars are on the road. County Agent Milt D. Moore oversees care in the county.

Pittman Wins Nevada Primary For Senate Nomination
Senator Key Pittman a Democrat and chair of the Senate foreign relations committee won a large primary victory in Nevada. Unofficial returns from 212 of 246 precincts show Pittman with 11,284 votes, H. R. Cook 3,691, and Bob Moore 894. State Engineer George W. Malone secured the Republican nomination for Senate. He will face Pittman in November.
