In Baltimore on October 31 Governor Ritchie pressed a permanent state relief program amid campaign talk of welfare measures. Socialist candidate Dr Broadus Mitchell criticized opponents during a broadcast from the city. Ritchie warned that lawless elements and gamblers threaten Baltimore if left unchecked.
Monticello Indiana October 31 deputy attorney general J Edward Barce and eight men held as witnesses in the John Dillinger wood en gun jail escape case vanished from a Monticello hotel as an attorney sought to serve a habeas corpus writ on Barce. Sheriff Hayes learned Blunk and seven others were missing after Barce reportedly fled via a fire escape with the group. The incident echoes Indiana political tensions ahead of election day.
Louisville October 21. A new hearing in Nashville will set removal of Thomas H. Robinson Sr to Louisville for trial in the Stoll Kidnaping for November 9. U S district attorney Sparka said a new warrant against the elder Robinson will be issued and served in time for the hearing. Robinson, his son Thomas H Robinson Jr and the son's wife Mrs Francis Robinson were indicted on conspiring to kidnap Mrs Stoll. Mrs Robinson is jailed. the younger Robinson is a fugitive.
Ha serstown hosts the Alsatia Club Mummers parade tonight with a projected 50 000 spectators. Chairman Tom Cross reports the 1984 pageant will be the biggest and best, featuring 25 drum corps bands elaborate floats and hundreds of participants from past and present characters. The parade starts promptly at 8 o'clock with participants at 7 for marshalably lineup along a route over a mile long.
The Alantia Mummers Parade travels from Prospect and West Washington east to Public Square then north to Flat Iron Building. It countermarches to Square and disbands at South Potomac and Baltimore streets, with a rain backup to Thursday night and Friday Waynesboro events.
Secretary Frances Perkins and Senator Robert F Wagner urged the re election of Representative David J Lewis. Perkins praised his career as rare and broad in welfare and social legislation. Wagner called his return essential for sound government humanitarianism and progressiveness.
A Hancock mass meeting drew about 400 Democrats despite Republican opposition. Congregational David J. Lewie keynoted, praising the New Deal for farmers and workers, with William Preston Lane endorsing Lewie. State Senate hopeful Mish and State's Attorney candidate Bostetter also spoke. Thomas Gilleece Jr. presided. A Hancock rally precedes a Williamsport event Thursday with a torch parade.
Hollywood tribute arranged after Lou Telegen died near penniless following his suicide in Chicago. Mrs Jack P Candahly, widow of the victim, led friends in organizing funeral services as the former idol of stage and screen was mourned.
In Greensburg Pennsylvania on October 31 John Pedder paid 27 dollars for hunting squirrels out of season and without a license. H Le Guess, who had the animal in his possession, paid an additional 10 dollars.
George H. Lamar of Washington and Rockville endorses Congressman David J. Lewis for reelection. Lamar praises Lewis for industry and constructive work in Wilson era legislation and says his retirement would harm public interest. endorsement dated Washington D C October 29.
Health Department reports numerous farmer replies to Agriculture’s offer to aid eliminating Bangs Disease. Farmers who cleared infections at own cost may be compensated for diseased animals. A Department rep will visit next week to outline the plan and date. MERCHANT DIES IN BALTIMORE AT 64.
A mob threatened to march on Denver relief projects as stone barricades ringed Table Mountain to bar rioters. Four policemen and about 30 others were shot or beaten in yesterday’s clashes, with authorities fearing further violence as FERA workers prepared to resist possible renewed disturbances near Golden.
Honolulu reports Sir Charles Kingsford Smith plans the final Pacific hop to California on Thursday afternoon weather permitting. He and navigator Captain P G Taylor rest after a 25 hour flight from Suva 3197 miles away. The pair expect to land in Oakland, the launch point of their 1928 Southern Cross flight, after previously mulling a Los Angeles stop.
A two day old Chevrolet sedan owned by Marty Vaughn, local taxi driver, was stolen at 6:30 this morning from in front of the courthouse. Vaughn had just placed the vehicle in taxi service and no witness saw the theft.
London dispatch reports the Japanese naval delegation will tell the Americans there can be no surrender on naval tonnage equality. It is stated that without equality from Britain and the United States, an agreement is unlikely, jeopardizing progress in the talks. France meanwhile has notified Britain of preparations to crush any Nazi putsch attempt in the Saar region.
Wychwood Abbott, the 9 to 1 favorite, wins the Cambridgeshire Stakes at New Market. A field of 33 ran as Perryman guided the mare over the mile and an eighth, finishing half a length ahead. Commander III, at 40 to 1, was second by a head over Highlander, who carried 22 to 1 odds. Wychwood Abbott is owned by O. V. Watney, sired by Black Abbott from Sweet Hainault.
Three Americans won 150000 each when Wynchwood Abbott won the New Market Cambridge wire handicap in New York. Holders of tickets included Mrs. E Fenz Maspeth L I Ming Mac Nelson Astoria and an entrant signing as Never Quit at 91 First Ave New York. Eight sweepstakes tickets across the U S held by Commander M11 supporters finished second.
Washington reports that Mrs Mary Booth a treasury department employee won fifty thousand dollars in the Irish sweepstakes and declined to be interviewed in treasury office hours noting the Comptroller might comment She said she might need a job in a few years showing caution about publicity while keeping the prize intact.
In York Pennsylvania on October 31, seven inoculations have failed to take on Charles Zeigler a 45 year old pupil. He cannot attend high school without a vaccination certificate and his parents request an immunity test for smallpox from the state health department. Since age six in 1925 he moved between school and home and has reached the eighth grade despite repeated inoculations.
Police disclose that the Nicodemus National Bank loot last November and the spring hijacking of Russell Bennett are tied to a Tri State gang led by Robert Mais and Walter Legenza. Fingerprint matches from Richmond and Washington police corroborate the gang’s involvement and a jail escape that left an officer dead and two wounded. Bennett was seized from his St James home and driven toward the District of Columbia area after a night raid, with loot including grain alcohol and cash.
The Enquirer reports Federal prisoner D Y Sanders, held in Troy Ohio, writes Hauptmann confessed kidnapping the Lindbergh baby and needing help handling the ransom. Sanders says he offered to dispose of part of the money in Germany but declined, recounting a 1932 meeting in New York.
