South High to host overseas students via exchange program
South Hagerstown's Forum on World Affairs plans to sponsor one or more foreign students through the American Field Service. Each student costs 650 dollars to sponsor, funded by a yearlong drive featuring dances, movies, and events. Foreign participants are 16 to 18, screened by the State Department and educators, and will study as seniors living with South High hosts. Officers of the forum are Charles Ruthrauff, Anneleis Kappelmeister, Cheryl Gabriel, Kitty Wood, J. R. Rutherford, Anna Saum, and others.

Twelve Die In Crash Of Airliner
FRENCHTOWN Mont AP Investigators sought an explanation today for the Northwest Airlines passenger plane crash that overturned in air and plunged against a mountainside. Eight passengers three crew members and a hitchhiking stewardess died in the burning wreckage over a quarter mile. The airliner bound for Minneapolis from Portland Ore was in cloudy weather and due to make an instrument landing less than 20 seconds later in Missoula. Witnesses described the plane rolling over and crashing with a tremendous noise and blaze.

A Pittsburgh youth, George E. Martin, 2, pleaded guilty in Magistrate's Court to two counts of reckless driving and two counts of leaving the scene after striking unattended vehicles. He was fined $100 plus costs for damages totaling about $515 across three cars. Police say Martin, reportedly drinking, drove west on Irvin Ave and struck a parked Volkswagen, then another car on Hamilton Blvd and Potomac Ave before calling from an A&P store. He suffered minor injuries and was jailed for the fines and costs. A separate crash on East Ave left Roland Laymen with $15 damage and McAllister charged with failure to stay right after crossing the center line. both incidents involve reported intoxication.
