Prison labor limits hamper wartime needs in Maryland
Baltimore October 29 Willis R Jones chair of the Maryland Department of Correction says he advised Frederick county farmer official Benjamin Rosenstock that prison labor would be offered if feasible. He notes current law bans prisoner employment for private gain and cites staff shortages and transport costs as barriers to expanding outside assignments. He reports about 1,000 inmates work on state farms or public works from a 2,700 inmate population while 20 more officers are needed to meet public agency demand.
