The 82 year old retired Republican faced a perjury charge after a grand jury probe linked to a 1974 fundraising scheme tied to Orlando fundraiser Larry Williams. Williams took illegal contributions from Florida builders in exchange for favors from FHA Florida offices. The jury's sole issue was whether Gurney knew before mid 1973 that Williams used part of the funds to pay Gurney's political and state expenses. Gurney, once a tough Watergate era defender of Nixon, served three Senate terms and is now asserting victory over the government.
