Democratic vice presidential candidate Estes Kefauver’s Maryland trip was cut short when his plane could not land at Abe Marting Martinsburg Airport due to low ceiling. He drove from Washington to Frederick for a talk, then planned return to Baltimore. The event drew hundreds at the Masonic Temple in Hagerstown who planned to greet the candidate before his first Maryland visit.
Burglars struck two county sites in the night and the Chewsville Cooperative at Smithsburg was entered, stealing ammunition, motor oil, and anti-freeze. The Bloom safe weighed 800 pounds and may bear the name H. A. Poffenberger. four or five people assisted in removing it. A 100-pound safe was taken from Spickler Motor Lines on Cearfoss Road. The scene yielded trophies, a clock, and no cash. Deputy Sheriff Bruce Spickler investigates.
Adlai E Stevenson branded President Eisenhower as the shadow candidate of a GOP old guard afraid to trust the people with the country’s future. Opal Collins, 25, a Hammond resident, became the first Indiana woman sentenced to die in the electric chair after a jury found her guilty of killing Mary Sue Collins, 11. She fainted as Judge William Murray set February 15 for execution at Michigan City penitentiary. an appeal on temporary insanity is likely.
Approximately 200 donors gave blood to save 9-year-old Therese Garasic in Landover Hills Maryland. Therese, suffering a nose and mouth tumor, needs AB-positive blood, a rare type. the region’s blood center reports many joined on standby lists as doctors fight the child’s critical condition.
Fifteen homes changed owners this week amid a generally slow real estate market with low turnover and few building sites sold. Brokers report continued interest across property classes, especially building sites, as sales by deed list transactions involving McCauley Berkson to Cecile Seibert on North Avenue No 47 and Harbaughs transferring property to Hughes.
A Maryland trucker Roy A Shipley and a Bronx girl Miss Tenvari were killed when a tractor trailer struck an auto on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Donegal. Joseph Ochesenfeld 23, of New York City, and Miss Cemari 16, Bronx, were injured. Cemari’s condition was serious. Shipley, 48, of Cumberland, operated for Maryland Motor Lines.
Vienna dispatch reports three regional Communist chiefs were dismissed for not backing the new Polish regime. Warsaw Danzig and Stettin district secretaries were relieved as Gomulka led a bloodless uprising that ended Stalinist control in party councils.
Wallace Reidt of the Maryland State Parole Commission, once a noted Kiwanis speaker in Hagerstown, was struck by a motorist. He died this morning at 5 45 in a Baltimore hospital where he was being treated after injuries. Mrs Sally Detrien 75 and stepson Warry Detrich 49 were found injured at their Baltimore county home after neighbors reported the blinds drawn all day.
Baltimore negotiations between Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co and its 5224 office workers continue as the contract nears its midnight expiry. The Communication Workers of America says strikes are possible if demands aren’t met. Current wages range from 48 to 107 weekly based on job and tenure. Union officials have not released a formal list of demands but cited a $2.50 wage offer under discussion. Company says talks are ongoing with proposals and counteroffers exchanged.
Four Hancock area men faced spotting deer with a spotlight near Hound Top area. Wardens observed them with a loaded 20-30 rifle, charged by Game Wardens from Hancock and Allegany County. Magistrate Edward Fost imposed fines totaling $537, with individual penalties of $130 plus notes.
Two persons were injured when a car rear ended a city bus on Virginia Avenue this afternoon as the bus discharged passengers. Police are investigating. Separate crashes injured Shavk, 40, at Franklin and Jonathan Streets, and James Wood, 34, of Pittsburgh, whose tractor trailer skidded on a mountain slope on Route 40. Damage to the truck was heavy.
Samuel Hankey of Hagerstown was charged with running a stop sign after a collision in Martinsburg. His truck crashed into a Martinsburg man’s car injuring a passenger taken to the hospital. The truck was owned by Nelvale Equipment of Battimore.
Vienna reports say western frontier guards were recalled to help fight the rebellion as roof to roof clashes raged in Budapest. Imre Nagy announced a new popular front government with non Communist members while rumors spread that Russians forced him to make reforms and even seized control in Budapest. border police described the situation as remarkable as Hungarians claim Moscow pressure and revolutionary forces coordinate from Győr to oppose Soviet divisions.
In ASNEAL Alaska on October 27 44 counting of absentee ballots completed yesterday shows Democrats with 21 seats in the Territorial House of Representatives to 3 for Republicans. Democrats win 31 of 33 offices, including all territorywide posts. Republicans take a territorial Senate seat count of 3 to Democrats 0 but Democrats gain Senate control via holdovers.
