Detectives study a black leather diary and two leather address books found in a triplex apartment on 51st Street near Second Avenue. The volume lists 200 to 300 names as police review the links to a brutal Easter Sunday 1937 slaying and related crimes by an isolated suspect now in Matteawan State Hospital.
Samuel Young aged 34 of South Potomac street and Violet Hammer aged 17 of Elizabeth street were treated at Waynesboro Hospital Saturday around 3 am for injuries from an accident near Waynesboro. Young had contusions to the right elbow knees and abrasions to the right temple. Hammer sustained nasal lacerations. Details of the accident were unclear. SHOCK Recorded BOMBAR India Oct 24 An earthquake shock of great intensity with epicenter about 1,290 miles distant possibly along the northern India border was recorded near midnight at Colaba observatory.
Joseph Chaney was found at West Church and Foundry streets Sunday at 12 15 by Patrolman Charles Wolford and taken to Washington County Hospital with a severe head injury. He said he was attacked by another man and named his assailant. Chaney was described as spattered with blood.
A large turnout is expected at Franklin Court Auditorium tonight for the opening meeting of Hagerstown and Washington counties fledgling Community Chest. Lt. Col. Fred C Reynolds, Fort Meade post chaplain, will be the principal speaker. The event aims to acquaint the public with the Chest’s aims and to plan next month’s campaign. Leading citizens support forming the Chest, seen as filling a long felt local need.
The submarine Dorado, commissioned August 28, is listed as lost after less than two months of service.
