Real estate deals totaling about a half million dollars were recorded this week in Hagerstown and Washington. Fair and cool tonight with lows from 34 to 42 degrees across Hagerstown and western Maryland. Sunday will be mostly sunny and warmer with highs in the 60s. Eastern Shore and southern Maryland see similar conditions with 37 to 47 degree lows and 60s to low 70s highs. Monday brings fair skies and a bit cooler temperatures. West Virginia forecasts fair and not so cold tonight with lows 36 to 42 east and 40 to 45 west, then fair and warmer Sunday.
Frost as late as 8 a.m. whitened ground and damaged garden vegetables. Lima bean vines wilted at 30 degrees. South Mountain area saw 32. Forecasters predict milder tonight and a return to 60s tomorrow. Oakland Maryland posted 22 as the season’s latest frost in 50 years, last in 1936.
In a predawn crash on the Mississippi near Buras Louisiana the Italian freighter Lorenzo Marcello collided with the American passenger ship Alcoa Corsair. Official counts ranged from five dead and six missing to at least ten dead with about 25 injured. The Corsair was beached to prevent sinking and one hold flooded. cause under investigation with possible fog reported.
William Bert Phipps of Chilham Heights Maryland is charged with the killing of 70 year old Grace M. Cochran whose decomposed body was found in the woods near Gambrills October 19. Police Lt Earl J Huber says robbery was the motive and that Phipps claimed he got eight cents from the victim’s purse.

Mrs Ella F Webb of 30114 Jonathan St was charged with shooting her mother Mrs Ella V Smith five times. She had been held for grand jury action on assault with intent to kill and after doctor examination was committed to Crowns ville State Mental Hospital. The victim was reported in satisfactory condition. The pair argued over which bus to Philadelphia when police say both had been drinking.
