Keedysville observer J A Miller notes chimney swallows departed two to three weeks earlier than usual this year. He records the birds as the main harbingers of spring, with an early return and an unusually early move southward toward Dixie in late September to dodge killing frosts.
David Knight, fifteen months old, of Harpers Ferry, injured his left hand Sunday when he cut it with an axe. He was admitted to Washington County Hospital where the first finger on his left hand was amputated.
The Associated Press reports the national labor dispute total fell to about 217,400 as coal miners reran to work under John L. Lewis. A looming 10 city glass workers strike rides on the backdrop of reduced idle figures, with scattered returns from layoffs across steel, auto, and shipyard sectors.
Seven more Hagerstown and Washington County GIs are scheduled to arrive or have arrived from overseas. On the Sea Snipe at New York, T-4 Lawrence C. Orcutt of Funks Town, Pfc. Jack H. Saum of Hagerstown, and T-5 John H. Stevenson of Washington County, were due to arrive yesterday. Also aboard the Robin Sherwood were T-5 Joseph E. Hessong and T-5 Herman J. Kuhn, both of Hagerstown, arriving yesterday. Friday arrival at Newport News, Va on the Admiral Capps includes Pfe. Germand W. Hamburg of Hagerstown and Cpl. Roger G. Newcomer.
Police report two of three stolen vehicles recovered over the weekend. The Chevrolet truck belonging to Wayne Kershner was found near its theft site. The Buick belonging to H W Sykes was located behind Beck's Tavern. Mrs L A Pleasant's Dodge remains missing after a Sunday theft. She received a call from Chambersburg claiming the thief would wreck the car.
First prize of 3.50 split between tips on frozen grass killing county cattle and plans for 50 new houses in the West End. Second prize shared by tips on a 45 inch rattlesnake killed by Hancock youth and requests to finish Potomac bridge at Sandy Hook. Third prize to an older man for three tips including a GI’s homecoming death, a missing child return, and a groundhog in Hagerstown.
Sst. Tanley Joseph Schum Jr of Silver Spring Maryland flew 35 missions over Germany as a waist gunner without a scratch. He received discharge last month. Yesterday his car hit a traffic island at a rural Fairfax County Virginia intersection. Schum and passenger Miss Betty Florence Gensel 21 Washington were killed. five others were seriously injured.
The Matthesius twins Fred and Frank caused confusion at a service discharge center as their sister Dorothy Ash of Chicago greeted them. When she called out “Hello Fred” one twin responded “I’m Frank,” exposing the mix up and prompting playful relief among nearby service members.
Eugene E Delauter of Smithsburg was admitted to Washington County Hospital yesterday for injuries to his hand from a bicycle fall. He was discharged from the hospital yesterday afternoon.
Unofficial docks leader Tom Powell warned the government of a possible general strike as the walkout spreads to new piers. He condemned using soldiers to unload food, saying it damages Britain and social security. Troop dock workers totalled 10,000 with 3,100 more called up. Strikers reached 41,000 with 1,300 walking out at three London piers.
ANNAPOLIS Md Oct 22 Assistant Chief Engineer Robert W Reindollar of the Maryland State Roads Commission was elevated today by Governor O Conor to the post of commission chairman succeeding Maj Ezra B Whitman retired The Governor said the appointment was based on his ability and experience in road building and that there would be no interruption in projects already determined upon The new chairman will serve the unexpired six year term and the position pays 10000 annually
Chief Justice Walter P. Stacy of the North Carolina Supreme Court will preside at the labor management conference opening November 5. The White House said President Truman invited Stacy to lead the meeting to seek a new understanding between management and labor. Eben Ayers noted Truman is reviewing the labor price situation and expects to meet most participants in two weeks.
Joanne Koons, six months old, of Chambersburg Pa, was admitted to Fleming Hospital Williamsport on Saturday to remove a penny from her throat. Hospital attendants said the child’s brother gave her the penny to play with, then she apparently swallowed it.

Two German prisoners of war Fritz Bueckner and Karl Henglein flagged down a cruising police car in Albuquerque. In broken English they asked for a ride, admitted crawling under a work camp fence six hours earlier, crossing town and visiting friends at another POW camp. They said they were en route to their own camp and mistook the patrol car for a taxi. military police then transported them back to camp.
Weekend break in at Merchants Wholesale Grocery Co. on West Franklin street yielded nothing. Damages at Southern Dairies on Forest Drive. thieves damaged trucks and management blames local youths. Mrs J W Bricker reports a fox terrier pup stolen from her yard on Mitchell avenue.

Two robberies in two mornings target taxi drivers in Hancock County. Roy Lynch, a Hancock taxicab driver, was robbed of 230 dollars by two men, one tall in a soldier’s uniform and one shorter in civilian clothes, after signaling him for a ride. William Mobray of Mayflower Cab Co. was robbed of 28 dollars the prior day by the same duo. A four state alarm was issued as authorities pursued the incident.
Ruxton Maryland October 22 Mrs William Cabell Bruce 79 widow of former U S Senator Bruce died at her home after illness She had been a hospital patient about a month and was a founder of the Gilman Country School active in the Red Cross and other charities She was born Louise Este Fisher daughter of Judge William A Fisher of Baltimore who served on the city's Supreme Bench in the 1800s and 1890s.
A meeting of the General Committee of the War Memorial Committee is set for 7 30 o clock tomorrow evening in City Hall Council Room. J Vincent Jamison Jr General Chairman states the purpose is to report progress and seek agreement on the preferred memorial type described as a living memorial an auditorium and convention hall with landscaping and parking. He notes other ideas such as a monument carillon library hospital nurses home school have been considered but no details or architect have been chosen until the majority choice is known.
In Caracas a revolutionary junta seized control after a weekend of armed clashes. Romulo Betancourt, 37, former journalist, named president and interior minister, pledging free universal suffrage by secret ballot and good neighbor policy in the hemisphere while promising to protect foreign investment. Roscoe Hicks a 46 year old Hagerstown resident was admitted to Fleming Hospital Williamsport on October 18 to have splinters from a .22 caliber cartridge removed from his right eye. Hospital authorities said Hicks was firing the weapon when the shell exploded sending particles into his eye. It is unclear if he will lose sight of the eye as he remains in hospital for treatment.

In Long Beach California on October 22 1927 Jay P Mix and Eva Dyer Mix aged 75 and 73 were granted a license to remarry after 31 years of marriage and four children. A son’s wartime death aboard a sinking American transport helped reunite the couple as they sought a fresh start together.
Harold R. Wineturg aged 43 of 43 North Potomac Street is honorably discharged from the Army at the separation center in Fort Knox Virginia.
Philadelphia reports the 14 day hunger strike by 13 inmates at Eastern Penitentiary ended as guards concede no solid food will be served until doctors say they are in good condition. Acting Warden Cornelius Burke notes the strike stemmed from demands for privilege parity. Eleven of the strikers previously escaped by tunneling under walls last April.
The Senate Finance Committee calls for an anti-chiseling clause in the general tax reduction bill to ensure refunds on floor stock when liquor tax falls and that refunds reach customers. Sidney Boldin a 23 year old sailor describes undergoing a major operation in a Japanese prison camp at Macassar without anesthesia. A Dutch civilian surgeon was forced to operate while Boldin was tied to a table. pain was severe, he recalls. He spent three and a half years in the camp and says prisoners ate rats cats and dogs nearby for sustenance.
Charles Shipper, 71, of Hedgesville West Virginia was killed instantly Saturday evening about 7 80 when struck by a car driven by Jacob Clark of West Virginia. A companion of Shipper is missing and believed struck. Clark was arrested by the West Virginia State Police and held at Berkeley County jail.
Paris reports show Gen de Gaulle securing an overwhelming victory in a two part referendum. Voted to draft a new constitution and to appoint a provisional government during the assembly's seven month tenure. Official totals from 84 of 92 departments: 13,887,082 for new constitution versus 554,750 opposed. 9,582,210 for interim government versus 4,841,249 opposed.
Clyde Kenneth Rickard, son of Patrolman and Mrs. Fred Rickard, now at Bainbridge awaiting admission to a Naval Hospital, wears numerous ribbons and service stars. A metalsmith first class, he has spent eight years overseas including three years in China, with service on Corregidor. His decorations include a China Service Bar, Philippine Defense Bar with two bronze stars, American Defense Bar with one bronze star, American Area Bar, Asiatic Pacific Bar with two silver stars and a bronze star, and a Good Conduct Bar.
London October 22 Former Prime Minister Winston Churchill urged rapid demobilization of British armed forces and warned that the task of holding Germany down will be easier than holding her up, reflecting tensions in the labor government over postwar policy.
In Albuquerque on October 22, Mrs Eloisa Cervantes summoned an ambulance after her four year old son Manuelito swallowed a marble. Doctors searched the boy but found nothing. The child later explained it resembled a white marble used with clothing and was pronounced moth proof for the moment.
