Autoist Seriously Hurt When Car Strikes Cow Near Hagerstown
A motorist, Jerry M. Paxson of Hagerstown Route 6, was badly injured and his car demolished after striking a cow on U S Route 11 about two miles north of Hagerstown. The vehicle traveled 500 feet to strike a utility pole. Paxson is at Washington County Hospital with possible skull fracture and numerous cuts. The cow was owned by William Parlett. Police say there were two dead cows nearby but only one was struck. The crash occurred around 3 15 a m. The top of the pole caught fire. Paxson's hardtop convertible was totally demolished. Paxson was taken to hospital by Community Rescue Service. Deputy Thomas Funkhouser assisted at the scene.

Three sentenced in fraud case over stolen welfare check
Floyd Lewis, 35, Clyde Barnhart, 38, and Doris Barnhart, 30, were convicted of obtaining 29.50 by fraud after cashing a stolen Welfare Department check at the Ha gerstown Housing Authority. Lewis and Barnhart received five months in jail with 15 days suspended upon repayment. Mrs Barnhart received a suspended sentence with a year of good behavior. The Welfare Department stopped payment on the check and $31 rent was paid. Mrs Barnhart did not receive any of the funds.
