A Pacific County plane crash left 31 aboard unaccounted for as authorities investigated the cause and searched for survivors. Local officials described the incident as a serious air disaster prompting swift emergency response and ongoing inquiries.
Mrs. Carrie M. Young, 87, of 1423 Virginia Avenue, died at Washington County Hospital after a fall at her home. She passed at 11 30 p m, within 15 minutes of admission. Born in Thurmont, she was the daughter of John and Anna Stull. A member of St John’s Lutheran Church, she is survived by daughter Mrs Hoyre, brother Allen Stull of Taneytown, two grandchildren, and a great grandchild. The body was moved to Minsich Funeral Home. Funeral announcements will be made later.
Washington County Hospital will install a new voice paging system to replace bell and signal lights. Speakers and equipment are being installed by Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company and will be active within two weeks. The system will let physicians be paged from the switchboard with speakers in all areas, while the existing illuminated numerals will remain for night use to avoid disturbing parents.
Former City Councilman and ex police officer Luther Broom suffered a serious heart attack at Marlboro racetrack and was taken to Laurel Hospital. He owned several thoroughbreds racing at Maryland tracks and had recently entered the racing scene after his wife’s death, with plans to run in the Hagerstown meet.
Eugene Geary of the County Roads Department reported to the Board of County Commissioners that 3.51 miles of new road were completed with another two miles underway and due for completion within a week. From July 20 to September 1 flood repairs delayed work, but excellent weather aided progress. The report notes repairs to the Pry Mill Road stone arch bridge and the Caffman Road bridge, flood damage on Harper's Ferry road near Hoffmaster road, and planned arch pipes on Mousetown Tend and Amos Reeder road. Several new projects were outlined with bids due October 23, and plans for a steel truss bridge on Dog Street road. Maintenance on three county dumps and a joint city-county dump was cited, along with a new signal at Jefferson and Pangborn for Pangborn Boulevard school traffic. New construction completed since September 1 includes Smithaburg Mt. Lena road, Valley Drive, Fairfax road, Cherry Free Drive, Oak Hill Avenue, Wareh Avenue, Pin Oak road in Oak Ridge Development, Knotty Pine Drive, Miner Avenue, Day Street, and Rosewood Drive.
In Washington, Secretary of State Dulles reaffirmed that the United States would provide aid within constitutional limits to victims of aggression in the crisis-ridden Middle East. He spoke at a news conference on the issue.
A report states Iraqi troops would not advance into Jordan at present, easing tensions along the Israeli Jordan frontier. The pause reduces fear of broader conflict as Israel and Jordan monitor developments near their shared border.
Bulletin from New York reports Rep Adam Clayton Powell says President Eisenhower supports jailing anyone who disobeys the Supreme Court desegregation order. Samuel J. Cohen appeals a permit to Longmeadow Shopping Center Inc arguing the proposed center at Northern and Potomac Avenues is too large. Longmeadow’s attorney contends ordinance lacks size limits and supports a regional scale, while Cohen and his counsel press a community center limit tied to a 300000 person trading area. Cohen testifies his only objection is size. permit already issues for 38 stores, Sears Hoebick, four-story building, and 1250-car lot with an estimated $1 million cost.
The City of Hagerstown and the county awarded bond issues totaling 13 800 000 with the city paying roughly 2 448 in interest on its 5 8 million issue and the county about 83 return. Eight financial firms submitted bids led by Halsey Stuart and Company and Goodbody and Company at about 2.9857 to 2.9890 percent. Mayor Winslow presided as bids were opened before the Mayor and Council and Board of County Commissioners.
City market will no longer be sold on Thursdays. Clerk EL 1, Kerney announced a day change. Market will be held on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the year and winter.
Roy F. Weagley of Hagerstown Route 1 sustained a chin laceration after a morning ladder fall. Toland of 17 South Prospect Street injured a knee, and Elizabeth McNabb of Qi Mpin Avenue fractured an ankle. All were treated in the hospital emergency room.
A Pan American transport plane with 31 aboard ditched in the Pacific about 1,045 miles southwest of San Francisco. Coast Guard rescue operations saved all survivors as four engines failed, breaking the aircraft in half upon impact at dawn. Pilot Richard Ogg guided the craft while Coast Guard ships and a seaplane secured the scene.
Storm battering Florida with high winds and heavy rains moves north along the Atlantic. A Miami bulletin places the center near Vero Beach and advancing at 10 mph with 20 to 40 mph winds extending 300 miles.
