Baltimore report notes a Maryland Court of Appeals ruling that belief in God should not be a jury duty requirement. The Catholic Review editorialized that excluding atheists or Buddhists from juries clashes with civic rights, while legal actions and appeals loom over the state as cases backlog grows.
Walter Robert Mott, charged in a federal warrant with kidnapping a 14 year old girl, waived a preliminary hearing in Baltimore and was ordered held without bail pending his return to New Jersey. He will be transported after sunset, with the case linked to a March abduction and rape in New Jersey and Massapequa, N.Y.
Two persons were treated at Washington County Hospital for minor injuries after a four car collision on the Dual Highway near the city limits, state police said. Rheecha Yousmam of Centerville and Horn of the Dial Highway were injured in a chain reaction when a tractor trailer driven by Robert Finnegan of Altoona struck the rear of Horn’s car, pushing it into a car driven by Jennie Mintdrop of Day Rd. Embert of Centerville was also involved. H. V. Smith charged the truck driver with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
In Hot Springs Virginia Secretary of the Treasury Fowler said the balance of payments deficit is being reduced as tourist spending rises and imports slow. He noted July and August were stronger for the economy, with experts predicting further progress into 1966 and a continued move toward equilibrium, despite a deficit of 1.3 billion dollars in the first half of 1965.
The Morning Herald and Mail will begin a new Youth Forum feature on Mondays. The section will publish letters from area schoolboys and girls, expanding editorial pages with youth views and community input.
Gloria K. Mellett an 18 year old bride to be from McConnellsburg died Thursday at Washington County Hospital from injuries in an automobile accident. Born May 12, 1947 in Waynesboro she was a 1965 Southern Fulton High School graduate. She is survived by her parents sisters and brothers and a grandmother. Services will be Sunday at 2 30 p.m. from Kelso Funeral Home with two ministers officiating burial in Union Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday evening at the funeral home.
Sanford E Fox of Route 1 Berkeley Springs was killed Wednesday at home when a car fell crushing him. Born February 2, 17, he was the son of the late Albert and Amanda Kemp Fox. Survived by wife Teressa Hendershot Fox, three daughters and three sons, plus five sisters, six brothers and nine grandchildren. He was a retired ward worker and attended Pine EGR Church. Services Sunday at 2 p.m. with Reverends Day and Van Gilder. burial in church cemetery.
Obituary notices from the Frederick County area report the sudden death at home of Emmert Marion Warrenfeltz at 7 p.m. Thursday, a long-time resident of Hagerstown and Maugimsclle, with funeral arrangements at Coll man Funeral Home and burial in the Church of Breth ren Cemetery Broadfording. Also noted is the death of Jacqueline M Thompson, 3 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Thompson of 242 Pennsylvania Ave, with services at St Matthews EUB Church and burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Additional brief items include the death of Leonard L Kane of Skokie Illinois formerly of Hagerstown, with survivors listed and funeral in Skokie.
Vatican City AP report says the Ecumenical Council approved a declaration deploring anti Semitism and stating Jews as a people are not to blame for the crucifixion. The final ballot showed the strongest opposition, with a notable push to remove the term deicide. Bishops voted 1,821 to 10245 to drop the reference, while the overall document passed by a two thirds margin.
Washington AP The House approved a 4.2 billion appropriation bill but stripped 126000 to start a rent subsidy program for low income families. Rep James Harvey led the amendment for denial amid GOP support and earlier housing bill opposition. Administration sources expect the funds to be restored later despite the delay.
Local residents Timothy Bender and Terry Little described seeing yellow lights in the western sky near Hagerstown and hearing a high frequency noise around 9 56 p m Thursday night. They traveled toward the city along Virginia Avenue Wilson Boulevard and Potomac Street where the sound occurred again though lights remained unseen. The Daily Mail notes the incident follows a spike in unidentified flying object sightings with no harm reported so far.
Baltimore lawyer Francis B. Burch, once solicitor in the school prayer case, condemned a Maryland Court of Appeals decision banning belief in God as a jury duty requirement. Burch, now state insurance commissioner, called it another blow against the concept of God in society. The suit originated with Madalyn Murray, leading to the Supreme Court ruling that compulsory prayers in public schools were unconstitutional.
