Columbus Ohio October 14 United States Senator Claude Pepper a Democrat from Florida said Taft a Republican from Ohio more than any man in America had brought on the present high cost of living and the shortage of meat by wrecking the price control law in the last Congress.

Harry Cramer on Oak Hill Avenue reported hub caps stolen from his auto, and Salem Avenue residents complain of boys shooting out windows with air rifles.

Joliet, Ill Oct 14 Leahm Helly a 36 year old juke box king and Will county political figure was shot to death as his wife and three year old daughter watched six shots hit him in the head and shoulders as he stepped from his car in the driveway. Police said he headed the Automatic Machine Company which ran 700 to 800 juke boxes in Will and southern Cook counties. He previously served as Will county deputy sheriff and bailiff to Judge Edwin L Wilson.

He cited better transportation and a shorter work week as factors that could pull urban residents back to farming, noting modern farm workers produce about 2500 dollars annually versus 1870s 60 dollar crops.

Lawrence W. Barber, 21, colored, faced Magistrate Martin V. Bostetter in City Court on a charge of assault with intent to kill Michael F. Gargula, 34, of Port Covington, who required 34 stitches after a knife or ice pick wound. Gargula held Barber as a suspect with a $2900 bond set for the November grand jury.

He said only portions of treaties with Italy Romania Bulgaria Hungary and Finland pleased Russia and that many issues would return to a four power council for unanimous decisions. He accused the US Britain and France of violating their agreements and retreating from the four power accord. Highlights included Balkan guarantees for Danube navigation and a disputed Bulgarian border as of 1941. Sen Arthur Vandenberg urged cutting Finland reparations from 300 million to 200 million, provoking Molotov.
W M Chaney operator of a filling station on Rt 40 fired seven shots at a burglar who broke the glass and tried to enter the station last night. Deputy Bruce Spickler said Chaney claimed the intruder fled after Chaney fired and that the station had been entered three times this year.
J T Burns paid 667 for a woman he claimed was not his daughter after police said otherwise. On Oct 14 Cedar Rapids confirmed Burns’s claim when his daughter Mrs Tom Evans arrived from Chicago, triggering questions about the unidentified woman buried in the family plot.
