German troops are pushed back from Soviet heavy artillery range on the Dnieper above Kiev. Soviet forces push toward Latvia frontier within 70 miles and press on from Vitbesk gaining four to seven miles and capturing 140 villages. Red columns near Vitebsk advance to Liozno, 25 miles away. A German planted time bomb exploded in an Naples artillery barracks killing 25 and injuring at least 30 as crowds headed to a cathedral. Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark visited the scene amid evacuations and ongoing inspections of buildings suspected of hidden explosives.
Rev Dr Paul L Powles resigns as rector of Trinity Episcopal Church Martinsburg. He cites medical orders for rest after recurring ill health. Powles born in Hagerstown, served since 1931, previously granted indefinite leave, with Rev J Armistead Welbourn serving in his absence.
Early today the temperature hovered within one degree of freezing with a heavy frost. Government weather observer J A Miller at Keedysville reported. Yesterdays maximum reached 72 degrees.
A biographical sketch of John W. Taylor of Taylor's Landing appeared in the Daily Mail Life Line column on September 18. Mrs. Gertie Mordan of Harrisburg, Pa., found the article and wrote that it is the first news of her uncle in fifty years. She plans to visit by request for directions to his home.
The Supreme Court agreed to decide if a draft registrant was legally inducted after refusing the induction oath. The case centers on Arthur Goodwyn Billings, a former University of Text teacher who called himself a conscientious objector.
Poultrymen report chickens not thriving due to lack of greens from prolonged drought. Egg production remains steady but grazing shortages affect condition. milk production drops up to 25 percent as some farmers resort to silage. Water supply issues noted, but no major shortages yet as farmers haul water.
Reports from Norway said a German troop train with about 1,000 soldiers crashed through a bridge over a ravine between Oslo and Drammen, killing 70. Saboteurs were blamed for the collapse of the bridge.
The 70-year-old Zion Methodist church in Milton Delaware burned yesterday two hours before services were to begin. The church building replaced an 1818 structure, and the origin of the fire is undetermined.
Allied forces report taking Vila airfield and all Kolombangara land in the central and southern Solomons with no resistance. MacArthur says operations began October 6 and ended October 9, leaving no Japanese survivors and ample war material as evidence of a retreat from strategic sites.

Gittinger reports demand eight times higher than inflow from Fishing Creek reservoir and imposes ban on non domestic water use. About 1.5 to 1.7 million gallons come from Linganore plant, rest from Fishing Creek.
The Western Maryland Railway will station guards on several Cumberland area bridges and arrest trespassers after reports of deaths and injuries on bridges. A Ridgeley woman drowned after panicking near a Potomac crossing as trains neared. Officials say the public has no business on railroad property and promise drastic action to curb trespassing.
Allied Fifth Army troops strike 12 miles northwest of Benevento to flank the German Volturno river line in the first battle for Rome. Pontelandolfo captured as a spearhead along a 44 mile inland water front while the Eighth Army advances in the Adriatic sector. The Volturno crossing north of Naples presents a major obstacle as high water deepens the river. Clark reportedly remains confident despite the stubborn river defense and rains raising water levels.
Many 4-F men in Hagerstown and Washington County may join the armed forces if draft policy lowers standards. A medical commission proposal under Senate review would require reexamination by psychiatrists for those labeled psychoneurotic or inadequately personality, while those with physical defects would likely remain 4-F. This shift could also delay fathers' induction until next spring.

Admiral Nimitz said 61 Japanese planes were destroyed and two ships ruined, while US losses included 13 planes as fighters escorted Avenger torpedo bombers and Dauntless dive bombers.
Mrs John Sigler and her infant son narrowly escaped death when their home near Marlowe burned late Saturday. They leapt from an upstairs window, using a mattress as a cushion to survive the fall. Investigators believe the fire started from a cook stove.
Richard L. Fisher filed for divorce from Charlotte J. Fisher through Attorney C. K. Hartle in court today. Frances Catherine Bachtell was granted an absolute divorce from Raymond P. Bachtell by Judge Jos. D. Mish this morning, with Hartle representing her.
Workers at the Smithsburg War Food Administration camp favor Florida over returning to the Isle of Bahama when their U S Government contracts end. Supervisor Whitingham says most want to stay in the states, remain in Smithsburg for winter, or move to Florida if possible, with some preferring temporary return to the islands only if necessary. The contract with the Bahamas’ governor expires soon and may be renewed for those who wish to continue in U S camps.
In Ore, Thomas Moser of Reading Pa seeks to support the war by enlisting his dog in the Army K-9 Corps with permission from his boss Paul J. Gernert the warden. Moser is serving a 10 to 20 year Berks county prison term for second degree murder.
Washington county farmers are urged by the County Farm War Board to borrow or lend farm machinery where there is not enough to go around. The applicant who keeps his machinery the busiest at home or with neighbors will be the one who gets the rationed gear. The choice to borrow from a neighbor is not considered in allocations.
In Cumberland Maryland on October 11 four flood control plans were reviewed by the mayor and council along with the municipal planning and zoning commission. They will choose by November 15 which Army engineers plan to support. Clarence Renshaw district Army engineer said the channel plan would be most economical and protective, involving Wills Creek deepening walls and moving the dam upstream on the Potomac River.
Allied air operations over Greece and the Aegean continue with heavy losses to Germany. Northwest Africa Air Force flew a 1509 mile round trip to strike Tatoi near Athens and Araxos in the Peloponnesus. RAF bombers joined raids on Maritza Calato and Rhodes. Sixteen enemy planes were shot down in Crete Rhodes and Greece, including fifteen dive-bombers near Rhodes.
Matthew Kozera a 33 year old fugitive ex convict with $6000 in rewards posted was killed in a violent gun battle and hand to hand fight with detectives. He died at the bottom of a cellar stairway after tumbling with Detective Walter C Monaghan over a gun. Kozera had been sought across the East since the death ten days earlier of County Detective Albert T Lorch. Lorch was killed with his own gun during a scuffle in an alley while arresting Kozera for questioning in a tavern burglary. A gun taken from Kozera matched the weapon used to kill Lorch. The detectives had waited two hours for Kozera after Mrs Lucy Troilo told Detective Vincent Boccanne an acquaintance she believed a new roomer to be the fugitive.
Washington reports that the government will keep military and other agency purchases out of the butter market until March to free supply for civilians. The War Food Administration says civilian butter availability should rise from 10 to 30 percent, with ration value at 16 points per pound unchanged. Shortages persist in areas distant from major producing centers.
London reports Britain's secret weapon fires a 17 pound shell capable of blasting a tank turret at 1500 yards. The gun, a little over feet long, uses a fixed cartridge and semi automatic breech with a high rate of fire to counter the German Tiger tank.
London reports American 8th Air Force raids through German centers at Muenster Coesfeld and Vegesack with 102 enemy planes shot down. Fortresses and Liberators also hit Bremen Danzig Gdynia areas. 400 bombers total in Friday Saturday strikes as invasion plans loom across the Channel and North Sea.
A five acre forest fire burned near Crampton's Gap on South Mountain over the weekend. Believed started by a hunter's discarded cigarette stub, the blaze near an Appalachian Trail lean-to was first controlled by district forest warden Herman Toms. Strong winds rekindled the fire Sunday, and campers assisting warden Palmer and firefighters helped bring it under control again. The State Forestry Department urged extreme caution for hunters campers and hikers due to dry leaves and scarce water in rural areas.
Police chase a six foot man in a dark suit and brown hat after an early morning ransacking at the Soya Corporation of America office on McPherson Street. An employee surprised him as he rifled desk drawers and he fled dropping a registered letter from a desk pocket. The entrance was gained through an open street door.
German radio announced that Nazi submarines in the Kara Sea north of Russia and in the Northern Atlantic and in the Mediterranean sunk 79 merchant ships, three destroyers and one escort vessel. The Kara Sea operation occurred east of Novaya Zemlya as reported.
