William W. Wheeler of Washington D C assistant to the vice president of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies will address the Hagerstown Kiwanis Club tomorrow. His talk is titled Stepping Off Into Space. Wheeler has been with the Bell system since 1911 except for a postwar period as Virginia manager for the Man You Calculating Machine Company. He started as a clerk after college rising to statistician advertising manager and general information manager. He serves as trustee and vice chairman of the Washington Community Chest publicity committee and was co chairman of the publicity committee in Renovize Washington Campaign.
The Board of Education learned it could improve Yarrowshore and Mt Lena school grounds at little cost. Welfare Board volunteers would provide labor with a foreman paid by the School Board. Eight men a day could work, drawn from relief lists, with follow up visits planned to assess needed work.
Maryland submitted a $5.4 million federal aid highway application to the Public Works Administration. Senator Millard Tydings said the plan, presented to Henry Waite, aims for a 30 percent grant and 70 percent loan, with construction planned in Baltimore City and every county.
Members of the Jocal Lions Club, after a luncheon at Hotel Hamilton, toured the Pangborn Corporation plant invited by Thomas W. and John Pangborn. They reviewed new buildings, sand blasting equipment, marble slab samples, pattern and wood shops, foundry, warehouse, and offices guided by Victor Stine and W A Rosenberger.
