Congo strongman Mobutu orders Lumumba residence ringed by 200 soldiers amid scuffles and a shot fired in the air. Lumumba denounces the move from his balcony as supporters gather, while troop levels are cut to 50 but remain in key quarters.
United Nations officials awaited Premier Khrushchev for a final appearance at the General Assembly after his TV Radio interview in New York. He signaled no war and planned to return home Thursday. Nehru left for London amid mixed views on Hammarskjold and disarmament talks continuing.
Fog so thick overnight that two weather stations report minuscule rainfall of .02 and .01 inches. Beckenbaugh and Oswald describe staying indoors and returning to find weather unchanged. Five day forecast from Weather Bureau expects near normal to slightly above normal temperatures with little rain and no frost.
In Circuit Court two inmates of the State Reformatory for Males pleaded guilty to assaulting a guard and locking him in solitary confinement. Daniel E. Palm and Robert V. Sadler faced potential sentence holds while records are investigated. Also Alvin E. Bitner received five year terms on four forgery counts, with concurrent sentences, for forging checks totaling $600 in Hagerstown.
Judge D K Mc Laughlin sentences Donald J Newlin of Williamsport to 30 days in Washington County Jail after Newlin pled guilty to speeding 70 plus mph. He was found not guilty on turning off lights to evade arrest and acquitted on the officer disobedience charge. Defense cited a personality disorder. prosecutor noted the chase from Washington Square to Williamsport endangering others. Newlin argued lights were turned off by a passenger. judge stressed no motorist can flee with only a fine.
Theodore R. McKeldin former Maryland governor and Baltimore mayor will headline the United Fund kick-off dinner on Thursday Oct 13 at 6 15 p m in Franklin Court Auditorium. E W Cooey will preside and the program includes Rev Lawrence Strunk and R Paul Smith with C D Lyon delivering final remarks as drive chair.
AP veteran John Scali reports Khrushchev framed himself as a peace loving grandfather who seeks friendship with the United States. He said U2 tensions would fade, urged calm, and invited Americans to visit the Soviet Union while downplaying threats amid a two hour Open End interview broadcast to over 240 stations.
Havana reports Fidel Castro will deliver a speech blaming Washington for arming anti-Castro guerrillas. A government communique claims militia led forces crushed insurgents in the Escambray, with 127 captured for trial and casualties on both sides. Three Americans among invaders reported.
Fire gutted the rear garage operated by Charles Sellers at 401 Liberty Street and destroyed Ralph E. Sellers’ automobile inside the garage. Origin undetermined, started about 8:30 before opening. Three fire companies fought the blaze but it could not be contained. Family said the building will be torn down and rebuilt. Loss amount and insurance status not yet known.
Mrs Frances Ebersole aged 45 of Maugan sville Road was arrested on a charge of shooting Henry John Suffecool 28 of the 500 block West Church Street with intent to kill him. Suffecool was found in the yard of Mrs Ebersoles home last Thursday evening with a .22 rifle wound in the stomach. He was treated at Washington County Hospital where the bullet was removed. Mrs Ebersole had no prior connection to the shooting.
Col. George B. Sumner, Army engineer for the District of Columbia water supply, outlined an alternative to flooding the C&O Canal by a large River Bend dam. He described eight smaller dams on Potomac tributaries, noting the Monocacy possibility, but warned the small-dam plan would be more costly and still not recommended a choice.
Lynn Massachusetts AP General Electric Co workers crossing picket lines to work at the River Works plant brought more than 2 000 punctures last week as cars rolled over nails. Police report a new tactic with entrances splashed by a sticky substance and nails scattered in it. An electric sweeper could not lift the nails. The company closed two plant entrances and spread sand over the third.
The week’s news slip contest awarded prizes for tips on local events including a fire at the Farmers Cooperative, a Tennessee fatal accident, a Smithsburg birth, and various local incidents. Households from Ross Street, Sharpsburg, Boonsboro and Mt. Aetna reported tips earning $2.50, $1.50 and other small awards for prompt information.
Larry M. Frazer of Waynesboro was fined 25 dollars and costs for speeding and one dollar with costs for following too closely after being found guilty by Judge D K McLaughlin. He was arrested near dawn on August 17 on US 11 40 east chasing a car with two girls. Frazer’s attorney said he believed he knew one of the girls and sought their attention. Frazer’s father testified the youth had no prior trouble and had lost his job due to the matter in the Waynesboro paper. The 20 year old is attending a Baltimore trade school. The judge praised the parent for appearing in court. David C Harshman, 19, of Frederick, was fined 100 dollars and costs and given six months in the Maryland House of Correction for driving with a suspended license. the sentence was suspended on good behavior for two years. Harshman was arrested on Downsville Pike while testing a car after his license had been lifted in June. his attorney said a friend transported him to Hagerstown to repair Clever’s car.
A crash at Huyetts Crossroads left apples scattered along Rt 40 and Rt 63 after a truck loaded with apples was hit from behind by Calvin W. McCarty of Hedgesville. McCarty was charged with failing to obey a traffic light. Eugene C. Brown, 30, from Rockill Furnace Pa., left the road and fell into a stream while traveling on Rt 57.
