Reports from residents say youths along Antietam creek near the East End of Hagerstown are illegally shooting and flushing game with dogs, continuing into evenings. Sheriff’s officers were summoned but the group fled. locals complain the wasteful out of season hunting harms game and may involve a rare blue heron.
The Justice Department announced civil actions in federal court in southern New York alleging anti trust violations in export electric equipment sales. Named defendants include General Electric Corp International General Electric Co Westinghouse Electric International Co and Electrical Apparatus Export Assoc formed by IGE and Westinghouse International.
Mrs Mary A Winstead of Clinton Illinois says her son Lt William Williams plans to return home soon with his wife and three children after leaving 39 years ago. He served in World War I and in China with the French army, then Philippines with a Filipino wife on Cebu and later fought with a Filipino Guerrilla band. The mother, 66, and a great grandmother, says she will be tickled to death.
Washington October 9 government prospects for ending the soft coal strikes brightened as Labor Secretary Schwellenbach reported progress after two meetings between mine union leader John L. Lewis and bituminous operators. A third session was planned to avoid seizures of 675 idle mines while 162,000 miners seek recognition of foremen as union members. He also sought a wage-price pattern akin to wartime little steel guidance, though progress remained uncertain.
A Portland woman said her wedding dress and veil were stolen from a telephone booth shortly before her marriage plans. Police were alerted and investigated the theft, which she called the meanest act.
In Zabasze Poland on October 9 a crowd of tearful Germans surrounded U.S. Ambassador Arthur Bliss Lane’s car in the former German Silesian city of Hindenburg. They claimed Poles forced them to speak Polish, starved them, and deported them. A wary Lane warned again this is Poland and recalled German violence in Warsaw, then drove off as Poles cheered and Germans sobbed.
The State OPA filed three federal suits to force Washington County landlords Irvin J. Grove Gilbert C. Sensenbaugh and Stanley McCoy to file registration statements under federal rent controls. Each case seeks an injunction to stop further violations. The Hagerstown Area Rent Control office notes these cases are long standing and tenants report missing copies of landlord registration forms or unsigned tenancy changes. All rentals must be listed within 30 days of rental.
A nationwide food crisis looms as an unauthorized dock strike ties up 275 ships across London and four ports. In Liverpool the movement began two weeks ago with 16,000 strikers defying a government appeal, preventing unload of perishables and draining reserve stocks.
Real estate pros and a major wholesale plumbing supply house report labor shortages and strikes delay soil pipe deliveries. Four railcar loads of pipe were cancelled and one manufacturer warned an order may take 18 months. Builders hesitate to start foundations until materials arrive, hindering new homes in Hagerstown and vicinity.
Washington County Scout Executive B. J. Hagedorn announced the Fall Camporee will be held Saturday and Sunday October 13 and 14 on Dr. E. W. Ditto farm in the Downsville section along the Potomac. Scouts will bring and set up shelters furnish their bedding and cook their own meals. Patrols and troops will be rated on camping proficiency.
The Hagerstown and Washington County service members returned yesterday from overseas duty aboard two ships. On Sea Owl at Newport News Virginia were Cpl. Raymond L. Ward of Hancock. On Komono Victory at Boston were Pfc. Harry C. Martin of Hagerstown, Pfc. Rodney L. Slifer of Rohrersville, Pvt. H. Buckthomas Jr. of Hagerstown, T-Sgt. Ellsworth H. Wilson of Hagerstown, Cpl. John H. Keefer of Clearspring, Pfc. Edward F. Grove Jr. of Hagerstown, and T-5 Donald W. Rohrer of Hagerstown.
Two decrees of divorce were filed this morning. John Linzey Igiehart was granted a decree from Mildred Frances Igiehart and Ruth Elizabeth Neal from Lawrence Stanley Neal. Attorney C. K. Hartle appeared in both cases.
Public Relations office at Fort Meade announces honorable discharges for Hagerstown and Washington County GI s between October 7 and 9. Recipients include T/Sgt Kenneth L. Everhart of 850 West Washington, T/4 William E. Wolfe of Hagerstown Route 2, T/Sgt Lester I. Betts of 25 South Artizan Street Williamsport, and others listed with home addresses in Clearspring Williamsport Chewsville and Williamsport.
Pierre Laval was condemned to death for intelligence with the enemy and betraying France. The ex Vichy premier, who had boycotted the trial, faced a grim ruling as Gen De Gaulle later commuted Petain's sentence to life, while Laval's fate echoed amid a harsh political tribunal atmosphere.
Theron King known as the Phantom burglar, pleaded guilty to 104 indictments for burglary and larceny. He received five consecutive 10 to 20 year terms totaling 50 to 100 years. Sentences run after Philadelphia court terms. Detainers exist in Ohio Maryland and Delaware. Police say he entered homes unseen. Theft estimated over $100,000 with less than half recovered.
London October 9 Foreign Secretary Bevin told Commons that President Truman Prime Minister Attlee and Generalissimo Stalin could not break the deadlock over procedure at the Allied foreign ministers conference They referred the matter to their governments Attlee offered to discuss atomic power with the United States and Truman reiterated the secret of the atomic bomb would not be shared beyond the three allies with Britain and Canada.
Two 17 year olds Samuel Stephens of Martinsburg and Howard F Zeis of Brunswick were stopped in a stolen West Virginia car on Virginia avenue at 2 am. Zeis drove the car. Doornberger halted them. They carried a loaded .38 revolver, a tin coin bank, and a bag of coins. Zeis had contraceptives. they were turned over to West Virginia state police.
City Detective Wayne A. Sellman is investigating a break-in at the Mil ton Burger secondhand clothing store on the second block of Jonathan Street. He is reviewing surveillance and collecting statements from witnesses.
Flight Officer Edwin W. Whit of 35 Laurel Street has been returned to inactive status at the separation center at Fort George G. Meade Maryland.
Major General J. Robert Sheets, a local native, has been appointed deputy Governor General of Korea. The officer, son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Sheets of Summit Avenue, reports from Tokyo on a mission and will serve under General A. V. Arnold. He writes to his parents about his experiences in Japan and the destruction from American bombers and the atomic bomb.
Snow reported about 100 miles west of Hagerstown with first snow of the season at Thomas West Virginia midway between Cumberland and Elkins. Temperature dipped to 32 there. Keedysville saw a 37 minimum. Miller noted new thermometers arriving to replace faulty readings and to correct last month’s suspect figures. Rainfall totaled 0.18 inches last night.
In Buffalo on October 9, 1944, Federal Judge John Knight ordered the Schine Theaters chain and its affiliates dissolved or re aligned to restore fair competition with other theaters. The ruling ends a long anti trust suit begun in 1939, finding the chain illegally eliminated competition and commands re alignment of ownership to ensure ongoing fair play.
Gordon J. Eichhorn, 20, of Marion Ohio, selected star farmer of America at the 18th Future Farmers of America convention in Kansas City Missouri. He received 500 dollars after being named American farmer degree among 170 boys honored. Eichhorn began serious farming while in Pleasant Township High School Marion County.
American troops guarded a day over uncovered Japanese treasure valued at more than 250 million dollars held by the Imperial Army and Navy. Allied HQ said much of the loot has been unaccounted since 1937 and officials led the way to the hoard as Japan formed a new government under Prime Minister Kikuro Shidehara. The seizure aims to protect reserves and recover records of loot, with control to be decided by Allied authorities.
In Chungking Li Shao Shih, 39, secretary-general of the Chinese Communist party at Chungking headquarters, was shot in the chest while riding with a friend. His chauffeur fled after the killing and is being sought for clues. Li died about 1 hour 45 minutes later at a hospital. He was married to Cynthia Lee of the China Defense League. Investigators also questioned Li’s companion Liu Yatze, a noted Chinese writer.
Postmaster Thomas M. Simpson announced the local post office will operate 40 hours weekly with Saturday closures at noon. Veterans are urged to apply for temporary clerk and carrier positions with preference given to veterans for all jobs during the pre holiday rush. Four World War I veterans have already been placed recently, and more hires are planned to restore full hours.
Washington October 9. Harvard's Harlow Shapley told senators the current atomic energy situation makes concealing knowledge selfish and potentially dangerous. He urged not withholding essential findings that could benefit the world.

In Long Beach California on October 9, 118 furloughed sailors chartered five airliners to fly home. The plan sends them from New York to the West starting today, with a return flight set for November 2 picking up men at designated points. Sailors originate from the U.S.S. Astoria.
Richard Cecil Grove, 31, convicted of arson and sentenced to seven years, contests the ruling before the Maryland Court of Appeals. In jail since conviction, Grove, a World War II veteran, is appealing through attorney D Angle Wolfinger. He faced multiple indictments for fires at McEwen Furniture Co. Warehouse and several nearby sites in Maryland.
