Three migrant tomato pickers died after pancakes tainted with insecticide were served at the J. R. Griffin ranch in Winters California. Cook Jim Hines and an assistant allegedly used the poison thinking it was flour. The dead were George Martin 27 Henry Russell Webb 47 and Oscar Mattison 65.
Washington October 9 The Agriculture Department forecasts the U S cotton crop at 17 573 000 bales the second largest in history The estimate boosts hopes for a special session of Congress to pass surplus crop control legislation to stabilize prices and supplies and check sharp price declines from the new estimate
The U S Weather Bureau predicts increasing cloudiness followed by rain late tonight or Sunday with slowly rising temperatures. Chesapeake Bay will be overcast with similar temperature rise and rain, accompanied by moderate to fresh northeast and east winds.
The forecast covers October 11 to 16 with rain at the start middle and end of the period. Temperatures stay moderate through most of the week becoming much colder toward the end.
Ann Cooper Hewitt, a San Francisco sterilization suit figure, secretly married Ronald Gay, a 30 year old Oakland foreman, in Grants Pass Oregon. The marriage follows her January 1936 $500000 suit alleging forced sterilization and a separate $50000 harassment claim. The case and doctors involved had faced trial and immunized testimony, with Hewitt described as feeble minded and dangerously oversexed.
John R. Roland Sr. contests probate of Ruth Roland will claiming she was of unsound mind and unduly influenced. The actress died Sept. 22 leaving most of her million dollar estate to her husband Ben Bard, and legacies to others.

New York October 9 police report a cryptic note from the phantom scarlet circle slayer threatening I will kill again. Deputy Chief Inspector Ryan says the message appears genuine and orders 137 officers on emergency duty near Holliswood and Queens Village where Lewis Weiss and Francis Hajek were found slain. The note references the 3-X killer and suggests a repeat of the double murder in western woodlands.
Denver reports rising bitterness between the American Federation of Labor and the CIO over the International Typographical Union. Protests against seating Charles P. Howard as a delegate spurred pleas from ITU leaders, while printers threaten a decisive expulsion move by the Federation.

Audie James Robnett, 21, Kansas City Kansas, held on a murder charge in a Boise hospital under guard after a coroner s jury found eighth grade student Anna Jean Phipps slain on a desolate hilltop. Police say Robnett drove the nude body to a farmhouse after an alleged assault and a gunshot wound to his chest.
Merl J. Bowers 28 of Hagerstown was found guilty of drunken and reckless driving after a crash with Edward Carbaugh’s car near Antietam and Mulberry streets. He was fined 105 dollars plus costs. Both drivers and passengers escaped injury. Officers Welch and Broom arrested him.
Baton Rouge Oct 9 Attendants at the Louisiana Library Commission sought a book on Artistic Housekeeping. They wrote the Library of Congress for help and today state librarians supplied Rich's New Artistic Housekeeping, out of print since 1907.
China pleaded for the immediate convening of the nine power conference to end the Japan China war. A cable from Nanking signed by Wang Chung Hua said China would join the conference as a treaty adherent. In Washington Secretary Hull and aides prepared a policy outline for US delegates to curb Japan's invasion, aiming at a quarantine strategy.
Albert Heard, superintendent of the Water Department, said mountain water will not be turned into local mains for another month. With Edgemont Reservoir seven feet from the top, limited October rains could again force a prewinter cut of mountain water. If the reservoir runs low, the water may be cloudy for a week after reconnection, causing complaints.
Omaha on October 9 fire inspector Ralph Huffstutter inspected a basement work area of a shoe repair shop and found wiring that required fixes. While writing a notice to the owners an employee yelled fire and the blaze erupted where the warning was about to be issued.

Six Medina Pennsylvania residents from three generations were critically hurt in a collision on Washington boulevard Baltimore. The group includes Louis Heilmer 75 Charles Smith 44 Mrs Mary Smith 42 Mrs Jeanette Smith unspecified age Howard Smith 12 and Mabel Smith 15. All suffered head wounds internal injuries and fractures. Heilmer and Jeanette Smith were unconscious at admission. Cause not determined. highway had light traffic.
In Baltimore on Oct 9 Magistrate Allers heard James Hughlett whisper from a cell that he had "put one over on the cops" by swallowing slips and dropping others to a grating as police led him from a poolroom on a bookmaking charge. Officers Kammer and Krusneuski testified they found slips in the grating and Hughlett was remanded under $500 bond for grand jury action.
Light frost blanketed the New England countryside with brief snow flurries in the Berkshires and northern Vermont. Crop damage was slight as unofficial readings fell to 20 degrees.

Fifteen thousand blue gull sunfish were placed in Pangborn park lake under city supervision. The sunfish, about 144 inches long, will be ready for fishing next summer as a planned restocking funded by a small license fee. Some council members favor Park lake fishing for youngsters, but the Park Commission remains divided. Local property owners complain of odors from the lake during warm periods.
The State Tax Commission yesterday affirmed five county boards decisions denying Western Maryland Railway Company a reduction in assessments on rights of way. The railroad had appealed the county actions, each board acting independently.
