Senator Lucas proposed forming a Senate House committee empowered to report measures on atomic energy and to employ outside top scientists as an advisory group so Congress would always know what is going on.
A deed dated July 1 1903 was filed for record with Clerk of Court Edward Oswald. It conveys mountain land from Charles A Ridenour and wife to Lewis Longanecker. The attorney noted Longanecker intends to convey the tract to a son after the first deed is recorded.
The South Cannon avenue residents split last week's first prize in the Daily Mail news tip contest. One winner also claimed the first two consecutive weeks with tips on the city losing a bid to purchase surplus government trucks, the gashouse alley being concreted, and plans for a freight terminal in the West End. The other half was for the rare blue heron shot by an illegal hunter.
SAN FRANCISCO Oct 8 Dr John H Mansfeldt a prominent physician linked to a love triangle was found dead in his car on a cliffside. Deputy Coroner Ida Lasswell said he died three days earlier from poison just hours after his wife Annie Irene Mansfeldt was charged with murdering Mrs Vada Martin believed to be the rival for his affections. The widow collapsed in jail exclaiming I killed him and I loved him as she confronted the loss and the fate of their three teenage children. Continued on Page 2.
Pierre Laval is reported to be locked in a dungeon beneath the Palais de Justice as the fourth day of his treason trial begins. His absence delays, with juror replacement and fogbound witness Gen. Doyen causing the slow start.
An eight year old girl from Cut Bank Montana named Dorothy Lee underwent a delicate operation at Johns Hopkins Hospital aimed to improve blood flow to the lungs. Doctors said the procedure, led by Dr Alfred Blalock, cut and rearranged vessels to bring more blood to the lungs and her condition was described as satisfactory with improving coloring.
Local and county service members expected to return to New York and Boston this week include Pvt. Chester Bay of Hancock Cpl. Joseph L. Dipardo from Hagerstown and T-3 Charles O. Renner of William sport.
Former Boundary Methodist pastor Rev. Lloyd G. Davis expresses shock at the murder of Vada Martin, a Baltimore nurse and University of Maryland Nursing School student, killed by Annie Mansfeldt in San Francisco. Martin was described in her yearbook as cheerful, capable, and popular, with many friends at the university.
Treasurer Hugh K. Troxell announced that starting October 1 interest at one half percent per month will be added to unpaid county taxes. He urged delinquents to pay promptly to avoid further charges as another half percent will be added on November 1 with a new tax year approaching.
One new suit and two decrees of divorce were filed in court today. The new suit brings to 11 the number filed so far this month. Ruth Eloise Hasenbuhler, through Attorney C. K. Hartle, filed suit against William Floyd Hasenbuhler, Sr. Decrees were granted to Eliza beth Jane Holder from Glenn William Holder and Marian Irene Newman from Paul Augustus Newman. The Newman divorce is a partial one, C. K. Hartle appeared in both cases.
Unity Pueblo Colo Oct 8 Two young thieves ages 10 and 12 admitted stealing cars in two incidents. Police said one boy crouched on floorboards to work the clutch and brake while the other sat upstairs to steer.
The Western Enterprise Fire Company saved a mother squirrel and her four young, hollowing a log in a tree near the firehouse as winter quarters. The family moved in this morning, while other neighborhood squirrels visit the hall for nuts, hinting at a larger winter nut supply.
Tokyo Oct 8 aged premier Kijuro Shidehara completed a 15 member cabinet to be reported to the Emperor. The Keedysville official thermometer recorded a 34 degree minimum early today, two above freezing, though weather observer J A Miller doubts the reading until new thermometers arrive. The current gauge had malfunctioned weeks ago. Rainfall over the weekend totaled .14 of an inch.

She recently figured in a New York kidnapping case. kidnapping charge was dropped. Warrant accuses her of stealing a portable radio an electric clock and a wrist watch from Carl Henry Rugemer on April 12.
Pocomoke City Md Oct 8 a weekend blaze destroyed the Dryden Feed Mill with estimated damages between 50000 and 75000 dollars. State Trooper H F Wallace said the fire was out of control by the time four engines from Pocomoke City and two from Snow Hill arrived. The mill burned Saturday morning and still smoldered after daylight. Owner Benjamin Dryden could not estimate the quantity of feed and grain damaged.
Louis Benton Houff aged 60 waited for a bus in Washington on a cold night and told the driver that he would have died if the bus had arrived a minute later. After dropping a token he collapsed and died of a heart attack. Houff, a retired auto dealer, formerly lived in Staunton Virginia.
The British Air Ministry said Rudolf Hess flew from England to Frankfurt on the first leg to stand trial as a Nazi war criminal. He was moved in a guarded RAF plane with one army guard, a medical officer, an attendant, and an Allied War Crimes official. Hess had been held near Abergavenny, Wales, under tight guard for months.
Thousands of war brides in Britain, whose GI husbands have shipped home, plan a protest to urge shipping authorities to bring them to the United States. Police called off a Thursday parade, so the group seeks a large hall for about 10,000 women representing wives of 54,000 Americans and 34,000 Canadians plus others from British dominions. In Edinburgh, over 100 registered with the League of Angry Wives.

Washington officials outlined a two route plan to force action on the stalled unemployment benefits bill. The Senate passed the measure weeks ago, but the Ways and Means Committee has kept it idle while drafting tax cuts. If committee action fails, a discharge petition could move the bill to the House floor with 218 signatures. Rep. Boland said every effort will push committee members to resume study.

Technical Sgt Keller H Hartle Jr son of Mrs K H Hartle Hagestown Rt 6 has been separated from active duty after four years and nine months. He trained in the U S for 14 months and served ten months overseas in the South Pacific Theatre earning the Asiatic Pacific ribbon with three battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation with three clusters. Before service he was a dairy and agricultural farmer and his wife resides at Inwood West Virginia.
A land turtle bearing carved initials J. P. W. and the date August 1915 was found yesterday in a woods behind Ceartoss by Donald Jordan of Boonsboro. Jordan brought the turtle home with him.
The Associated Press reports a brighter labor outlook as government moves halt major coal strikes in six states. Back-to-work orders spread in coal, steel, and oil sectors with thousands returning to jobs. Strikes previously paralyzing New York docks and Detroit auto plants show signs of easing as officials anticipate widespread settlement this week.
The Supreme Court refused a rehearing on its June decision that the Associated Press must amend its membership by-laws. In a 5 to 3 ruling, the court said the by-laws restrain trade and violate the Sherman Act, directing removal of competitive considerations from membership decisions. AP had argued that opening membership was not a proper means to enforce antitrust objectives.
The Victory Loan Drive will begin October 27 featuring a $200 denomination bond as a Roosevelt memorial. John D. Hollyday, chairman of Washington county Victory Loan Drive, was advised by the Treasury Department that the $200 bond sells for $150 and carries a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The drive will not start until the opening date. Bankers report cashing of war bonds has slowed since V J Day, attributed to layoffs and moving costs. Hollyday urged bonds be kept to maturity to avoid inflation and noted cashing early trades a dollar for 7 cents.
