The War Labor Board approves a wage hike for about 650 employees at the Hagerstown Shoe and Legging Company local plant. Back pay retroactive to January 5, 1943 will be issued October 29. The approved raise ranges from 10 to 21 percent based on pay brackets.
In Albany Georgia a rural county sheriff special deputy and a former Newton policeman were found guilty of violating civil liberties statutes in the death of Robert Hall a Newton garage worker. They drew three years imprisonment and $1000 fines on deprivation counts plus two years for the conspiracy count with totals set after federal jury verdicts. Defense plans an appeal.
In CHUNGKING Oct 8 fighter planes of the 14th U S Air Force repelled a third day of Japanese raids on advanced American air bases in China. They destroyed one bomber and a Zero, probably another bomber, and damaged a third over Kiangsi. Mitchell bombers earlier hit warehouses and foundries at Shihweiyao. No American losses were reported.
RAF bombers supported by Thunderbolt fighters attacked Bre men and other targets in southern Germany including Stuttgart Friedrichshafen and Munich in daylight. German raids on London and southeast England caused limited damage as 15 of 60 raiders crossed the coast last night.
Maryland Office of Price Administration set wholesale and retail price ceilings on ducks amid high demand from armed forces turkey needs. Local Civil Air Patrol crews plan a simulated bombing raid on Baltimore Friday October 15 between 5 45 and 5 55 p m. Capt Arthur Lyem Western Maryland Squadron No 331 announced about fifty CAP planes from the Maryland Wing will participate. Each plane carries an observer as bombardier and 50 000 sand bombs are to be dropped on city sections with color markings for bomb type. The salvo will include incendiaries demolition and gas bombs treated as real explosives with a velocity of 25 feet per second and a total load around one and a half tons.
Found guilty of attacking Constable Virgil P. Cook and family. Donald, of the 400 block McDowell Avenue, was fined $50 and costs by Magistrate Harry E. Snyder in city court this morning. He and two others appealed and gave bond. The incident began when Cook called at the home to lay a replevin on goods yesterday shortly after noon. Sheriff’s officers reported later they encountered considerable resistance at the house during their investigation.
Swiss paper Allgemeine Volkszeitung described the Hamburg raid as a holocaust with a roof of fire and an oxygen-starved air chimney. Flames engulfed shelters as 20,000 people perished. only a minute fraction escaped the encircled city.

Annapolis flyer First Lieut. Frank Howard Thompson and his crew survived a fearsome engagement over Hamburg when a German 20 mm shell perforated the top turret, hit an oxygen tank, and set their fortress on fire. Despite heavy cloud cover and a dozen pursuing fighters, Thompson said the crew remained calm, fought their way back, and reached base after the perilous mission.
In Smethport Pennsylvania a saddled riderless horse trotted to a group of well diggers then carried a worker to the injured man Norman Hull who had a fractured leg after a fall Hull said he sent the horse for rescuers as it galloped a mile to reach him and summon help
The State Roads Commission plans to erect about 25 miles of snow fences in Washington County this winter, starting around October 18, to counter hard ground that hinders stake sinking. Additional fence may be added if more material arrives, with priority along major highways into Hagerstown to keep roads open for war production centers and plant access.
The mercury rose to 80 yesterday in Keedysville, one of the warmest fall days, then fell to 37 overnight. J. A. Miller, government weather observer, notes farmers continued hauling water from springs after cisterns ran dry.
Allied forces disclosed a campaign in the Dodecanese capturing Simi Island about 20 miles north of German held Rhodes. A Middle East communique said a German attack on Simi was repulsed with heavy enemy casualties and prisoners were taken. The note also reported Allied light naval forces destroyed German convoy and escort in the Aegean Sea. On the Italian front the Fifth Army captured Castel Volturno and Capua, establishing a 16 mile front along the Volturno river. The British Eighth Army on the Adriatic near Rome repelled a German assault.
After weeks of little activity the Hagerstown Navy Recruiting office reported an upswing with three youths accepted for Naval service nine set for examinations and two WAVES applications accepted this week. Local recruits named were Charles H. Morrison Richard W. Sauders and Stanley V. Otzelberger. Nine more youths will undergo physicals in Baltimore tomorrow.
Hagerstown banks withdrew an application to be declared locally needed by the War Manpower Commission to stabilize employment and halt turnover. After filing, they were advised to adjust working hours to meet regulations, so the request was withdrawn.
Baughman Witmer and Harry Baker, wanted in this county for stealing chickens, are scheduled to stand trial in Frederick circuit court. They lived here but operated in Frederick and Washington counties, were arrested near Baltimore weeks ago, and arraigned in Frederick city court. Witmer pleaded guilty. Detainers are on file with Sheriff Hugeit for several chicken thefts in this county.
The State Roads Commission will start and complete this month the center striping of about 50 miles of Washington county highway. Only the key roads will be striped.
Mrs. J. H. Davis of 498 Mitchell Avenue reports a plum tree in her yard is blooming for a second time this year. A first harvest of plums has already been picked from the tree.
Thieves gained entry from a second floor stairway at Cap Whitaker’s Harlem Tavern on North Jonathan street and absconded with over $1,000 in whiskey and gin from many brands. Five cartons of Beechnut gum, $10 cash, and a .38 revolver were also taken. Detective Wayne A. Sellman leads the case as Whitaker reports the loss possibly occurred several nights ago.
About 25 percent of the 20 000 applicants in Washington county have to be returned for incorrect forms. Chief clerk Thomas Bittle cites missing return addresses, missing serial numbers in parts A and B, and missing auto descriptions as the main issues. He urges careful completion to speed delivery of books.
A local ration office announced a new stove quota covering all types except gas heating and urged eligible residents to apply immediately. Although the total number allotted to the county was not disclosed, the office described the figure as low. Applicants replacing a stove must provide a statement from a repairman verifying it cannot be used, and dealers will help determine replacement needs.
London dispatch reports Adolf Hitler addressing Nazi leaders at his headquarters. He warned that German morale must stay high or the war would be lost, asserting that weapons alone fail without human will and praising the party’s resolve to sustain national spirit during air raids. He vowed that maintaining morale would ensure a great German victory.
The Free Yugoslav radio said American and British officers are at partisan HQs after German claims of a small Allied Balkan entry. Cairo noted Yugoslav partisans repelled German landings near Zara Dalmatian coast and Hvar south of Split. A Czech brigade trained by Britain reportedly landed to aid Tito and Mihailovic. Reuters Stockholm report said Tito’s forces near Zagreb with cut supply lines and heavy fighting ongoing.
County plans to modify the Tax Office interior to ease congestion during early tax year. The unused doorway will be opened to the corridor to relieve the suffocating crowding that occurs the first weeks of each new tax year.
Pedestrians in downtown Philadelphia witnessed a mounted patrolman and his horse vanish from a cellar, leaving a hole in the pavement. Patrolman Clark Hill and Pal were later retrieved two hours afterward with the aid of an S&S PLC and fire crews using an aerial crane to recover them.
London dispatch says the Red Army breached the Dnieper defense wall on three sectors near Kiev and south of Pereyaslav, southeast of Kremenchug, and near Dnepropetrovsk. The Moscow communique reports the creation of bridgeheads, repulsed German counterattacks, and heavy German losses as the offensive widens in western Ukraine.
Washington Oct 8 The Office of Price Administration announced liberalized tire rationing. Beginning October 13 passenger car owners with a special gasoline ration may obtain used or grade 3 tires. Local boards issue special rations for emergencies such as medical treatment food supplies and a change of residence.
Thieves entered Byrd's Filling Station at 700 block of Potomac Avenue for a second time in a week. A desk was ransacked but nothing of value was taken, and a rear window was broken in the early morning of October 3. Police suspect local boys in the neighborhood.
New York Oct 8 AP A four day tie up of milk deliveries in the New York area ended today with FL J Andre president of Sheffield Farms reporting pasteurization operations resumed in all five plants. He said workers had fallen ill last Monday following a WHLB ruling granting companies the right to reduce personnel.
