City Engineer Joseph Lyon announced last night that WPA officials plan to have workmen available next Monday morning to begin the Municipal Airport improvement project now awaiting local approval. Other city projects will be skeletonized to free labor for the airport work if notification arrives.
Funds totaling 102,617 dollars are expected to be released by the Comptroller General's office within a few days, streamlining pending disbursements and enabling related obligations.
Garrett Park Maryland October 7 two Baltimore and Ohio Railroad signalmen report thwarting two plots to wreck the St. Louis New York Express near Garrett Park An unidentified man placed a rail flange between eastbound tracks driven into ground and reinforced with bolts and heavy stones and fled into nearby woods before the train passed resulting in no injuries or arrests with signalmen John Crawford and Fred Oden noting the device and taking note of the incident.
The newly created Public Contracts Board was appointed by Secretary Perkins to regulate labor conditions under the Walsh-Healey act for firms handling about 380 million dollars in government contracts. The chairman warned that employers evading provisions could violate anti trust laws and noted a possibility that manufacturers might route sales through dealers to sidestep the statute.
Four aircraft firms submitted bids to the Coast Guard in Washington on October 7 for construction of two to six airplanes to be used in offshore rescue work. The planes would be twin engine and intended for emergency response duties.

In Canton Ohio on October 7 lightning struck Lehman High School football players during a rainy scrimmage. Cocaptain Don Correll, 18, was killed and Coach Jimmy Robinson was left paralyzed in one leg and seriously burned. Twelve others were injured, including two coaches. several were treated and released. Witness Wallace Ferrell described a blinding flash as players toppled, and Robinson said the storm appeared suddenly before the fatal bolt.
ELTIMORE, Oct. 7. The State Employment Commissioner ruled that the demotion of two suspended state policemen cannot stand pending their hearing on charges of violations of the merit system. Harry C. Jones told Major Enoch Garey that A. E. Markley and J. W. Wheeler must be retained on department records as sergeant and corporal, pending final decision. Markley and Wheeler had been reduced to officers and suspended along with J. T. Thompson and J. H. Taylor, all accused of accepting gratuities.
Ha gerstown Fire Department Chief Max Hoover urges homeowners to inspect premises from basement to attic before winter. Remove rubbish, shield inflammables with asbestos or metal guards, clean chimney and stove pipes, store hot ashes in metal containers, and use metal floor protection. Avoid kerosene or gasoline for starting fires, keep matches in metal receptacles, turn off irons when unattended, prevent circuit overloads and replace blown fuses with proper ones.
Citizens urged to store polishing oils used for furniture and floors in tightly closed metal cans to prevent spontaneous ignition. Proper fireplace screens should be installed. The Fire Department asks community cooperation to support the safety campaign.
