Inspector Samuel Bailey of the army recalls the felled tug as it began turning over after leaving a dredge in the shipping channel. He describes being tossed into the water with a life preserver drifting 200 to 300 yards away as the vessel sank amid very rough swells.
A survivor describes clinging to a trash can and another boy while three or four men waved to the Coast Guard before a tug finally reached them. He swam to safety after fifteen more minutes in two to three foot waves that rose to six to eight feet, the sea the roughest he had seen. The boat, the Tks Aunde, was too small for the conditions and the crew struggled to stay afloat until rescue.
