Former Secretary Cordell Hull, 75, remains seriously ill and essentially unchanged after a stroke at the U S Naval Hospital. He urged the big five powers on his birthday to replace dangerous differences with mutual confidence or risk incalculable disaster, as he labors to contribute to world peace and his life story.
A strike at Victor Products Corporation was averted after two days of negotiations with Local 842 UAW CIO. International rep Bert W. Bothe said a new contract was agreed on and would be presented to members tonight for approval before signing. The old agreement lapsed tomorrow if not renewed.
The Inland Game and Fish Commission will assign two additional game wardens to Washington County during hunting season to crack down on violations. Regional Warden Joseph A. Minke said field presence will be day and night to prosecute illegal hunters, noting 56 prosecutions this year with only one acquittal. Wardens will patrol bass and trout streams for undersized fish, off season fishing, licenses, and shell bait. Night patrols will cover deer areas and prohibit loaded rifles or shotguns in those zones. The commission will also deploy two more deputy wardens from another section next month to aid enforcement.
Lloyd Irving Chavis a former football player turned artist pleaded guilty to violating the Selective Service Act. He said his wife with big blue eyes persuaded him to abandon his induction in Pontiac in 1941. He was held on bond pending sentencing as the FBI noted his threefold support by wife and girlfriend and his artistic pursuits.
A small white terrier ran six miles under London alongside a subway train last night. Passengers cheered as the dog, panting and dirty, emerged at Calpham Common after the engines braked along the route. Officials noted the six miles took fifty minutes, longer than usual, since the dog could not chase the engine.
Connecticut conducted its first triple electrocution in Wethersfield with three convicts, James J. McCarthy, Arthur N. Tommaselli, and Raymond Lewie, dying after a 20 minute process for bludgeoning guard Herbert Parsell during a March 9, 1945 escape attempt at the state prison machine shop.
Washington County escaped frost last night as a brisk wind prevented air condensation in low spots. Keedysville weatherman J A Miller noted a low of 45 F, with yesterday’s high near 60 F, marking one of the cooler fall days. Snow flurries were seen in Western Maryland with Frostburg and Grantsville reporting cold snaps.
Democratic speakers at Sharpsburg rally accused the Republican Board of County Commissioners and road engineers of launching a vote buying campaign with taxpayer funds. C. William Hetzer cited no published figures and questioned road spending, noting the county has received state gas tax funds while roads have deteriorated. He challenged where $25,000 yearly road funds went and questioned the road engineer’s salary as the crowd of 300+ listened.

Chicago Oct 2 Mrs De Lores Hope wife of comedian Bob Hope won court approval to adopt two Cradle children in Evanston. Judge Edmund K Jarecki retained jurisdiction until April 9 1947. The Hopes had previously adopted Linda 7 and Anthony 6 from the Cradle.
Two war veterans visiting Hagerstown for a good time faced legal trouble. Gerald E. Jones, 23, Waynesboro, was found guilty of operating an auto while intoxicated leaving the scene and driving without a license, with fines totaling 122.45. George E. Barkdoll, 29, Sabillasville, charged with drunken driving, was found not guilty. Jones pleaded not guilty to drunken driving but admitted the other charges. Barkdoll pleaded not guilty to drunken driving. Jones testified they drank in Waynesboro and Hagerstown before colliding with Basil Sarigas’s car. Arrests were by Patrolman John B. Knode and Sgt. Jesse Brown. Jones said their only aim was to have a good time and perhaps attend a show.
A white faced steer weighing about 1706 pounds escaped from the Pennsylvania Railroad stockyards behind the city park early Sunday and remained at large. Foreman W F Kirk said the animal broke out of a freight car and busted four gates and a 414 foot fence during its escape. He rode a mule across the area searching for it without success. A farmer reported the steer near his barn but the farmer declined to approach. Call 2686-M if sighted to help recover the animal.
Regional game warden Joseph S. Minke reported chemical analyses of water from Antietam Creek below the Marsh Run outlet show pollution levels likely to kill fish. Deputy Warden David A. Gross and others traced the source to a local railroad. labor tests noted acidity and an oily film with odor. Fishermen reported hundreds of dead suckers sunfish carp and bass downstream from the Marsh Run. The railroad has been notified and a future check will be made.
Marriage licenses issued in September reached 842, far above August’s 4160, lifting the year to date to 3028. Clerks predict 1946 will be a record year across the clerk of court's office, with deeds and mortgages at 437 for the month and other records, including divorces, rising toward new highs.
The Rohrersville Parent Teacher Association asked the Board of Education to install a cafeteria in the Rohrersville school. The board considered the request at a recent meeting but could not reach a decision at this time.
Pittsburgh reports a 22 000 volt line break causing darkness for 18000 residents in Clairton and Wilsonborough. A Duquesne Light Co spokesman said a rope over lines caused the outage and only an expert could execute such a method. Union officials were unavailable for comment on sabotage claims as talks with mediators continued and transit service remained crippled by streetcar and bus tieups.
Local dealers report a 20 to 30 percent rise in seafood sales since OPA meat ceilings returned. Haddock cod porgies and butterfish plus shrimp lobster flood menus as fat and oil shortages hinder frying. Merchants note oysters and crabmeat are in high demand and many housewives believe fish must be fried. Prices rise amid stocking demand and cooking misperceptions.
Nuernberg prison psychiatrist Lt Col. William Dunn says Hermann Goering views himself as gallant and fearless but is, in fact, a phon y through and through. Psychologist Dr Gustave Gilbert agrees Goering is a phony and that all defendants know it.
Washington October 2 The Maritime Commission faced a shipping strike with optimism for an early settlement. A typewritten statement of the commission s policy circulated at a negotiating session last night. Union leaders and officials said the commission would enforce changes in working conditions on government owned vessels agreed upon by east coast shipowners and the unions representing captains mates and engine room officers. The main block is Pacific coast owners resisting terms more than eastern firms. Continued on page 2.
Doris Hareford through attorney Evan Crossley filed yesterday in court a suit against a local auto dealer for 218.70 claiming she was overcharged in January for a car. The declaration cites a car ceiling of 866.30 while she was charged 1085 with 215 paid upfront, 150 trade-in for a 1935 Ford, and the rest financed.
The Jewish community of Hagerstown will launch a $40000 local drive for the United Jewish Appeal goal of 100000000. At a mass meeting on October 8 at B n ai Abraham Synagogue Moses Grossman was elected campaign chairman. The effort funds Joint Distribution Committee United Palestine Appeal and National Refugee Service. Co-chairmen and officers were named including Herbert Brewer Max Freisher Maxwell Greenwald A Jacobson Meyer Berkson and Jack Shapiro.
Lawyers for the 11 condemned German war criminals said they would appeal to the Allied Control Council to change the death sentences from hanging to shooting if clemency pleas fail. Four power representatives held a long session in Nuernberg on October 16 for the executions and discussed transferring seven convicts to Berlin for prison terms. American guards strengthened security around the courthouse and jail with orders to shoot to kill if provoked.
Police Chief Max W Rickard said a 372 year old former Hagerstown resident has been taken into custody for questioning in the Betty Jane Kennedy murder. Investigators from Pennsylvania are en route to question him after he had been in custody for several days in a nearby city.
Pvt Garland D Lung son of Mr and Mrs C Lung of Lei tersburg Pike recounts the violent typhoon that tore through Guam wrecking many military buildings. He and fellow soldiers were forced from two shelters as the storm hit. power failed and nearly all structures were damaged. Lung, assignment to the 587th Air Engineer Squadron, 75th Air Service Group, arrived five days before the cyclone and had just been stationed 24 hours prior to the strike. He had been employed by Pangborn Corp before war service.
