Expect 400 For Firemen's Meet
Indications were yesterday that more than 400 firemen delegates are expected to attend the Maryland State Firemen's Association convention this week in Hagerstown. A convention committee meeting set plans for housing delegates, with entire tourist camps and many local homes offered. Governor O’Conor Dr H G Byrd and Congressman J Glenn Beall are slated to speak. registration opens Wednesday at 10 am in the Franklin Court Auditorium. Open house at local fire halls Thursday afternoon from 2 to 5 o'clock. a banquet is planned tomorrow night at Hotel Patterson.

Exmouth England Bill Baker, born without a right hand, sought war service and joined the Royal Observer Corps after RAF rejection. He served aboard the Empire Broad Sword as an aircraft identity expert, ferrying troops to Normandy and aiding wounded. The Empire Broad Sword struck a mine and sank. Salter is listed as missing since the tragedy.

Local FFA Youths Win At Frederick Fair
Frederick County youths excel in the state wide Future Farmers of America judging contest held at the Frederick Fair. Local placers include Ralph McCauley and James Darner from Hagerstown, William Sousa from Hagerstown, Gale Grove from Clearspring, and William Shifflet from Smithsburg. Boonsboro and Hagerstown schools also earned top spots in dairy and beef cattle events. Maryland FFA chapter executive committee members Richard Rice of Hagerstown and Harold Remsburg of Boonsboro are county residents. Six county students were among the 26 named to the Maryland Farmers' Degree, including Orville Helser Clearspring, Harold Remsburg Boonsboro, Guy Hess, John Stouffer, Richard Rice, and William Meyers of Hagerstown. In a separate incident, Charles Miller Jr. of Williamsport swallowed a safety pin and was taken to Washington County Hospital for surgery.
